A Labour politician who ‘hurled abuse at curry house staff and refused to pay for his meal’ while drunk is being investigated by the local council.
Councillor Gareth Lewis is alleged to have abused staff at the Taj Restaurant in Merthyr Tydfil in south Wales, who then called the police when he tried to leave without paying for the food he had eaten.
One staff member told local news service Nation Cymru that Cllr Lewis appeared to be ‘drunk’ and ‘did not know what he was doing’.
They added that the councillor, who represents Troedyrhiw, Pentrebach and Abercanaid and has been in office since 2008, returned to the Indian restaurant the next day to apologise and ‘sort out’ the money that he owed.
Staff have decided not to take any further action against Mr Lewis but Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council have launched an investigation into the alleged incident.
