Maitlis and Morgan mocked for calling Harry interviewer Tom Brady

‘I think he’s a bit busier with the NFL playoffs!’ Emily Maitlis and Piers Morgan are mocked on social media after accidentally tweeting the name of NFL star Tom Brady instead of Tom Bradby following his Harry interview

  • Piers Morgan and Emily Maitlis called Harry interviewer Tom Bradby Tom Brady
  • But Brady is an American football star and was ‘too busy with the NFL playoffs’
  • Ms Maitlis’ The News Agents podcast co-host Jon Sopel was quick to poke fun

Emily Maitlis and Piers Morgan have been mocked online after accidentally calling ITV journalist Tom Bradby American football legend Tom Brady after his Prince Harry interview.

Former BBC Newsnight presenter Ms Maitlis mistakenly praised the Tom Brady for his ‘great interview’ on Prince Harry on ITV News last night – but the sportsman was too busy with the NFL playoffs.

But colleagues – including News Agents podcast co-host Jon Sopel – and fans were quick to point out that the revealing interview with the Duke of Sussex was in fact taken by ITV News at 10 anchor Tom Bradby.

Prince Harry was said to have made a ‘declaration of war’ against the royal family with his interviews on ITV and CNN night, international media declared – after he attacked the Queen Consort, branding her ‘the villain’ and ‘dangerous’.

‘Hey Maitlis – would be one helluva scoop if this int[erview] had been done by America’s quarterback [goat emoji, meaning greatest of all time],’ quipped The News Agents podcast co-host Jon Sopel

Piers Morgan was also made fun of after making the same mistake this morning in a tweet criticising the Mr Bradby and Anderson Cooper – who interviewed the Prince on CNN in the US – but he deleted the tweet and replaced it with the correct spelling.

At just before 9am Mr Morgan wrote: ‘Why did neither Tom Brady nor Anderson Cooper challenge Harry about his appalling Taliban kill boast?

‘The one that made global headlines, enraged the British Army, stirred up Muslim fury, and has endangered the Royals & current members of the armed forces?’

Twitter users joked at his expense, with one person informing the journalist that Tom Brady is ‘too busy with the playoffs’ and ‘being a quarterback last night’.

Another user said Brady ‘is more concerned with this weekend’s nfl playoffs than what Harry is up to’.

Former BBC Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis (right of left photo) and ex-BBC North American editor Jon Sopel (left of left photo) left the corporation with ex-Newsnight policy editor Lewis Goodall to start The News Agents podcast with Global. Andrew Marr (right), who presents LBC’s evening show also slipped up with Tom Bradby’s name

Piers Morgan (pictured) asked: ‘Why did neither Tom Brady nor Anderson Cooper challenge Harry about his appalling Taliban kill boast?’ He then deleted the tweet and corrected ‘Tom Brady’ to ‘Tom Bradby’

And at just after 10pm last night, after the interview aired, Ms Maitlis tweeted, ‘Great interview by @TomBrady,’ accidentally tagging the American NFL star instead of the British journalist.

And Jon Sopel, also ex-BBC, was quick to make a jibe at his colleague’s expense, replying: ‘Hey Maitlis – would be one helluva scoop if this int[erview] had been done by America’s quarterback [goat emoji, meaning greatest of all time].’

Ms Maitlis wrote: ‘Great interview by @TomBrady. This is fundamentally a tragic story of a kid who lost his mother in the most appalling circumstances – and never found the support to emerge from that darkness.

‘But what’s striking is the sense the brothers fell out over how you deal with the British press. Harry accusing his family of their complicity with an industry he cannot stand.’

Twitter users were quick to point out that ITV News presenter Tom Bradby was in fact NFL superstar Tom Brady

Rich Jacobs, former producer for LBC – part of Global which produces The News Agents podcast – also quipped: ‘Tom is of the greatest NFL stars of all time. Nothing tragic about his amazing journey…..’

Fan of Ms Matlis’ and Mr Sopel’s podcast Peter Muggeridge said he would ‘like to hear The News Agents’ review of the NFL regular season and forthcoming playoffs’.

And Ms Maitlis was not the only journalist at Global to get confused over the Tom Bradby’s name.

At just after 11pm last night Andrew Marr – who now presents LBC’s evening slot – complimenting ‘Tom Bradbury’, not Tom Bradby, on his interview with Prince Harry.

He tweeted: ‘Brilliant piece of interviewing by Tom Bradbury… perfect click of right inquisitor, right subject, right moment. It must have taken nerveless concentration.’

BBC News producer Callum May picked up on both Marr’s and Maitlis’ slip ups, tweeting: ‘I am calling for a complete and total shutdown of anyone trying to say “Tom Bradby” until we work out what the hell is going on.’
