Major commuter city faces being voted WORST place to live in England for fourth time in just five years | The Sun

PETERBOROUGH faces being named the worst place to live in England for the fourth time in five years.

The Cambridgeshire commuter city has racked up more votes than any other with just hours left until the poll closes.

The tongue-in-cheek competition, run by satirical site ILiveHere, crowned the cathedral city the winner in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

But this year Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire nabbed the top spot, with Peterborough slipping to fifth place.

However, it appears it may take gold for 2023 with almost 20 per cent of the public vote at the time of writing.

It is miles ahead of second-place Liverpool and Oxfordshire's Henley-on-Thames in third which have 6.37 per cent and 5.99 per cent respectively.

Voting on the list, which also features Luton in Bedfordshire, Slough in Berkshire, and Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, closes at midnight on December 31.

During the last survey, Peterborough, which is just 50 minutes from London by train, was described as a "f***ing dump".

Despite its Gothic cathedral and wide green spaces, one voter said: "The atmosphere in Peterborough is draining.

"You feel totally isolated from the rest of the world and life in general, as though everything else is going on and you’re not part of it as you’re stuck in this dump."

And one person took it even further, arguing it should be wiped off the map completely.

The latest Office for National Statistics data in 2021 shows Peterborough to have an estimated population of 215,700.

It is among the most dangerous cities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with 111 crimes per 1,000 residents.

This is 45 per cent higher than the national crime rate, and 58 per cent higher than the regional one, according to CrimeRate.

The most common offences are violent and sexual, followed by criminal damage, arson and vehicle crime.

For housing prices, Peterborough ranks as somewhat affordable compared to other commuter hubs.

An average home would set you back about £289,994, compared to £586,925 in Woking, Surrey.

Peterborough came in at number eight on the list of English and Welsh towns and cities with the strongest annual percentage increases in house prices, according to Halifax.
