Man charged after cyclist dies in alleged hit-and-run

A man has been charged with dangerous driving causing death following an alleged hit-and-run which resulted in the death of a cyclist in Melbourne’s south-east on Friday morning.

Police said a 68-year-old Dandenong man on a bicycle was struck by a vehicle on Frankston-Dandenong Road in Bangholme, around 31 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD.

The cyclist was found by passers-by on the side of the road just before 6am, but was declared dead at the scene.

On Friday night, Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives charged a 37-year-old Cranbourne East man with multiple offences, including dangerous driving causing death and failing to render assistance.

Victoria Police detective sergeant Richard Wood said earlier in the day that investigators believe the driver did not stop following the crash, but instead returned home. Police spoke to the man at his residence before he accompanied them to Cranbourne Police Station.

Police do not believe the driver was speeding at the time of the incident, with the 37-year-old man likely the only person in the vehicle at the time.

“I would like to emphasise the point that if anyone is involved a collision like this, they do need to stop and render assistance,” Wood said.

“I think it’s important people drive to the conditions. If it’s dark, extra care and attention needs to be paid.”

According to Nine News, Victoria Police seized a Toyota Estima minivan from a Cranbourne property on Friday. The vehicle’s front windscreen was heavily damaged and a side mirror was broken.

The Cranbourne man has been bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on May 22.
