A melancholic moggy has been named the saddest cat by his adoring fans.

Pancho, 13, is from Maizuru, Japan, and with his droopy eyes and glum expression he has captured the hearts of many.

Owner Akira Maizuru said that despite his appearance, he is in fact a very happy cat.

She said: ‘Everyone loves Pancho and Pancho loves everyone in return. He gets along very well with everyone. He is very spoiled.

‘If I talk to him while he’s sleeping in the daytime and take a picture, I can easily take a good picture. But Pancho can look troublesome at times.’

Akira took Pancho into her care 13 years ago when she found him abandoned.
