PICTURED: Moment woman gets ‘firmly stuck’ waist-deep in thick mud on lake – and has to be rescued by a hovercraft
This is the moment a woman was left ‘firmly stuck’ in thick mud up to her waist – and had to be rescued by an RNLI hovercraft.
The unfortunate member of the public sank while crossing ‘a channel of shallow water’ at the south end of Marine Lake in West Kirby, Merseyside.
After a call to the Coastguard at 1.44pm on Bank Holiday Monday, a rescue vehicle from the Hoylake RNLI was dispatched to pull her out of the sludge.
She was successfully rescued but left suffering from ‘shock and the effects of the cold mud’. However, she did not require urgent medical treatment.
The woman was given ‘reassurance from the RNLI crew and plenty of blankets to keep her warm’ before being flown ashore on the hovercraft.

The RNLI said the hovercrafts crew were able to ‘swiftly extract the casualty from the mud and bring her on board the hovercraft’.
She was then passed to the care of the Coastguard and the ambulance service before the hovercraft returned to the lifeboat station for a ‘thorough washdown’.
Hovercraft commander Tony Warburton said he was ‘glad’ to rescue the woman but warned the public to be careful around thick mud, which is common to beaches around the Merseyside coast.
Mr Warburton, who is also Hoylake RNLI Second Coxswain, said: ‘Our crew were glad we could assist the casualty to safety after she got into difficulty in thick mud, which is common to beaches all around the Merseyside coast.

‘With more good weather on the way, we’re expecting many more people to head to the coast over half-term and would always advise visiting a lifeguarded beach, checking the weather forecast and tide times, and looking out for local safety signage.’
‘If you get stuck in mud, try and retrace your steps to safety or spread your weight as evenly as you can.
‘Avoid moving, stay calm, and discourage others from trying to help as they may get stuck themselves. Instead, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard, who will send trained and equipped emergency services to help.’
