Mum feared she’d ‘burn to death’ after getting trapped inside tanning sun bed

A tanning salon customer feared for her life after getting trapped inside a sun bed.

Natalie Rene had to be rescued by a fire crew and said it has put her off using sun beds for life.

The law student, who was naked inside it, added: “I thought, ‘This is going to be my coffin’.

“The lights were on and I thought, ‘I’m going to burn to death’. It was awful. I was really panicking, I just didn’t know what to do.

"I was pressing and pressing on the button but the lights didn’t switch off for what felt like ages.

“Even the thought of the firemen getting me out of there while I wasn’t dressed was utterly horrifying.”

Mum-of-four Natalie, 33, said the lid slammed shut as she lowered herself on to the bed in Loughborough.

She cried out for help and two members of staff came but couldn’t get her out.

Natalie says two customers tried to help before the fire brigade freed her.

She said they told her the hinges on the machine had failed.

The owner of Tanning House by Miami Sun did not comment but Leicestershire Fire and Rescue confirmed: “We attended and released the individual who was stuck in the sun bed.”

Advice on the NHS website says that people who use sun beds regularly are at an increased risk of developing skin cancer due to the UV rays.

It is illegal in the UK for someone under the age of 18 to use a sun bed, and if you do use them you should limit your sessions.

The amount of UV rays from the average sun bed is higher than midday tropical sun.
