Parents who beat baby so badly he lost legs to be freed after 5 years in jail
The biological parents of Tony Hudgell, who beat their son to the point his legs needed to be amputated, are set to be released from prison after just five years.
Jody Simpson, 24, and Anthony Smith, 47, were each given 10 years for cruelty at Maidstone Crown Court in 2018.
They had beaten their son to the point where Tony, Seven, had torn ligaments, contracted sepsis and broken fingers and toes.

The adoptive mother of Tony, Paula Hudgell, has become an influential fundraising and charity voice, campaigning for tougher sentencing and a new register for child abusers.
But now Paula, 54, has been informed by authorities that Simpson will be out in the coming week and Smith by the end of the month.
The pair of abusers get released halfway through their sentences automatically.
Speaking to theMirror, Paula said: “These monsters have spent just five years behind bars while Tony faces a lifetime of challenges as a result of their wickedness.

“They don’t go before the parole board or have to show any remorse to walk free. It’s like a blow to the stomach and makes me feel sick knowing those who abuse babies and children are free within a few years."
The young lad has won over the country in the last few years, earning £1.7million for charity by raising cash walking on his new legs.
But despite how far Tony has come since his injuries, Paul is concerned about Smith and Simpson, who weren’t going to be prosecuted by police until she and Tory MP Tom Tugendhat led a campaign.
Carrying on the work, Paula has pushed for the introduction of Tony’s law, which sees people who kill children given a maximum sentence of life rather than 14 years, and those who abuse them 14 rather than 10 years.
Paula said: “These monsters could be living in your street and you wouldn’t have a clue.
“Tony was so cross when I told him they wouldn’t be in jail for much longer. He has previously said he wants to be a policeman when he is older but told me, ‘I have to join now so I can re-arrest them.’
“It’s ironic too that, having won a Prime Minister’s award during lockdown in 2020, Tony has been invited to a reception on Tuesday, a date on which Simpson could walk out of jail.”
