Police say road rage could have led to fatal Edgewater shooting

Road rage between two men driving Tesla sedans may have led to the fight that escalated and turned into a fatal shooting last week at an electric vehicle charging station in Edgewater, police homicide investigators have determined.

The police on Tuesday appealed for public help by providing possible neighborhood porch or dashboard video-camera footage showing jockeying between the two Teslas prior to the shooting.  Adam Michael Fresquez, 33, a father of two young children, was shot to death. The 38-year-old man who shot him was detained and questioned, then released, as investigators piece together what happened. No charges have been filed.

Both men were driving Teslas – one red, one silver — and they went to the Edgewater Public Market to charge their cars, Edgewater Police Chief Eric Sonstegard said.

“Those cars were pretty noticeable. We really want to know if anybody saw two Teslas. It could have been a road rage incident,” Sonstegard said.

“We’re looking to see whether anybody remembers seeing a red Tesla and a silver Tesla driving out of the ordinary, whether they were driving fast, or one was cutting off the other, or the drivers were yelling at each other, making hand gestures, as people do in cases of road rage,” he said.

The shooting happened about 9:40 a.m. Wednesday in one of the six or so Tesla charging stations in the parking lot at the market, near the intersection of West 20th Avenue and Depew Street in the west metro Denver suburb of Edgewater.

The man who shot Fresquez initially left the scene and later called 911 to report his involvement in the fight. Police went to his residence on Xavier Street in Denver.

“If the investigation reveals that there is some criminal culpability, then we can go back and arrest the individual and charge him at that time,” Sonstegard said.

Anyone who witnessed a disturbance or road rage involving Teslas, which could have occurred along West Colfax Avenue in Denver or Lakewood or in the area along Sheridan Boulevard south of Interstate 70, is asked to contact Edgewater Police Department Detective Tristan Robenalt at 720-763-3029.
