Police prepare to dig for remains of missing 19-year-old student after serial killer Levi Bellfield ‘confessed to her murder’

Police are set to dig for the remains of a missing student after serial killer Levi Bellfield allegedly confessed to her murder. 

Homicide detectives from Scotland Yard visited Bellfield, 54, in Frankland prison in Durham for a face-to-face interview on Tuesday.

He told police of a west London location where he claims to have hidden the body of student Elizabeth Chau, who was 19 when she went missing in London in April 1999.

The fiend is already serving two whole-life terms for the murder of 13-year-old Milly Dowler, as well as Marsha McDonnell, 19, and Amelie Delagrange, 22.

The Metropolitan Police have said they are again looking to investigate Bellfield after he was interviewed by detectives for six hours, it’s been reported.

‘On Tuesday 9 May 2023, a 54-year-old male was interviewed under caution. Inquiries continue,’ a spokesperson for the Met told the Guardian.

‘We can confirm we remain in contact with Elizabeth Chau’s family. At this time we will not be providing an ongoing commentary. We have no comment to make.’

Bellfield’s claims that Ms Chau was his fourth murder victim are being taken ‘extremely seriously’ by the force, a source told the paper.

When she disappeared, Bellfield was living in West London not far from where she was last seen.

She went missing as she walked home from Thames Valley University after handing in an assignment.

A final CCTV sighting shows her walking past Ealing police station at 6pm on April 16, 1999. She was around a mile from her home.

The killer first claimed he killed Ms Chau to a prison visitor seven months ago, leading to two detectives, from a team which investigates unsolved homicides, interviewing him in prison and recording it with portable equipment.

The police detectives warned Bellfield that anything he said could be used against him in court when they read the criminal caution to him.

They asked the killer to point to where he claims to have buried Ms Chau’s body on a map of the west London area they had brought with them.

Bellfield also reportedly spoke of how he claims he kidnapped the Thames Valley University computer studies student and gave a disturbing account of the final hours of her life.

Police are set to dig up the area where Bellfield alleges he buried Ms Chau’s body and perform a forensic examination. 

Ms Chau’s family, who are from Vietnam, are aware of Bellfield’s potential for dishonest behaviour but have hit out against police for treating her disappearance seriously enough.

Scotland Yard launched an appeal for information on Ms Chau’s disappearance in 2012, 13 years after her disappearance, offering a £15,000 reward.

It was reported earlier this week that a statement given by Bellfield to police via his solicitor Theresa Clark is said to include how he killed her and also an admission of attempts to commit five other murders.

He also claimed to have carried out the notorious Chillenden murders, in which Dr Lin Russell and her daughters were attacked as they walked along a country lane in Kent in July 1996.

The family were tied up, blindfolded and then beaten with a claw hammer. Daughter Josie, who was aged just nine, survived but suffered severe head injuries.

Drug addict Michael Stone was jailed for the crime but continues to deny involvement.

His initial conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal in 1998 but he was convicted for a second time in 2001.

In 2017 his legal team claimed they had seen evidence of a ‘full confession’ by Bellfield. He denied it at the time.

Milly Dowler was kidnapped and murdered in March 2002 at the age of 13. She was walking home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, when she was abducted by Bellfield.

Her body was found six months later.

Marsha McDonnell was beaten to death near her home in Hampton, Richmond, in February 2003, whilst French student Amelie Delagrange, 22, was killed on Twickenham Green in south-west London in 2004.

In March this year, 54-year-old Bellfield got engaged to a regular female visitor at HMP Frankland.

News of his proposed nuptials with the woman, who is in her 40s, sparked outrage when they were revealed last year and the then Justice Secretary Dominic Raab vowed action to stop it happening.
