Police to ramp up suburban patrols after Doncaster East shooting
Police will ramp up patrols of suburban streets in Melbourne’s east after two men were woken by gunshots being fired at their front door on Saturday morning.
The men were asleep when two shots were fired at their home on Dianne Street, Doncaster East, about 5am. Fortunately, the pair was not physically injured.
Police believe the gunman drove to the home, got out of the vehicle, and fired two shots from a shotgun before driving off. Two shotgun cartridges were later found on the footpath.
Witnesses told officers they heard the voice of a man around the time of the shooting.
Detective Senior Sergeant Rohan Courtis said there was no evidence to suggest the attack was gang or drug-related, but investigators would explore “all avenues and connections” between the shooter and the address.
“Police are still making their inquiries. We’ll be working through that as the days go on, and will establish that in due course,” he said.
“There are no injuries to any occupant at this stage, but it’s obviously very disturbing for the occupants and the residents in the surrounding areas here.”
Courtis said the occupants of the home were not known to police. He said they were cooperating with the investigation and would provide formal statements to the police.
“They were just going about their normal lives, sleeping, and they’ve been disturbed by two gunshots discharged into the front of the premises,” he said.
“We just ask that they check their CCTV to help us with any vehicles that arrived. Dianne [Street] is a one-way street, so any vehicle coming into the street would be of interest to us.”
The suburban cul-de-sac is only accessible by car from Maggs Street.
Courtis described the incident as disturbing for people in the area and said police would carry out extra patrols to provide some reassurance for residents.
The shooting comes a little over a month after a father was allegedly shot at as he walked outside to check why his home had lost power about 9.20pm on December 21.
The victim’s wife Masha told Nine News she was inside her Interlaken Parade home in Rosanna, in Melbourne’s north-east, with her husband, young daughter, and mother-in-law when they lost power.
Her husband went outside to turn the supply back on when he was confronted by the gunman, who allegedly fired two shots at him with a small handgun before running off.
Security camera footage shows a man dressed in high-vis clothing walking up to the meter box and turning the power off, before waiting on the other side of the road for the occupants of the house to walk outside.
“My husband went outside and I could hear him yelling. I could hear shooting,” Masha said. “My husband was scared and worried for me because I was pregnant, and it was a horrible situation.
“My daughter was crying. I was confused and we are scared they are going to come again.”
Anyone who witnessed either incident or has dashcam or CCTV footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.
