Pre-cooked FRIED EGGS cause outrage after hitting shelves in Spain – with the nation appalled by modern laziness and environmental damage

Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona has begun selling pre-cooked eggs across the country, boiling up heated reactions from Spaniards angry at the laziness and environmental damage on display.

The pair of ready-cooked eggs are vacuum-sealed in a film of plastic, sold for €1.80.

‘Put in the microwave for 45 seconds’, reads the packaging. 

An average person in Spain throws away 34 kilos of single-use plastic packaging per year, said Blanca Rubial of environmentalist group Amigos de la Tierra in RTVE.

‘The price is exorbitant and the packaging cannot be less sustainable,’ said a user in Spanish, reacting to the post on Twitter. 

The price is the equivalent to a dozen uncooked eggs in Spanish supermarkets, according to The Local.

‘We are going to hell’, wrote Dr Elena Casado on Twitter, who posted a photo of the eggs.

‘¡Pero qué cojones!’ (What the f***!) exclaimed one social media user in Spanish upon seeing the eggs.

‘For the culinary AND ecologically impaired,’ said another.

Walmart and Carrefour also sell pre-peeled and dissected tangerines, which users mentioned

Spain’s new plastic waste law will ban plastic packaging for fruit and vegetables if they weigh under 1.5kg, but that won’t affect pre-cooked food such as the pre-cooked eggs.

Social media users had only just gotten over the upset of fried-egg flavoured crisps sold in Spain when the news came.

‘I guess the fried egg flavour crisps weren’t quite enough of an abomination,’ said a third user, referring to the crisp variety sold in Spain. 

Others compared the food to pre-peeled satsumas sold in Walmart, decrying the modern laziness.

Carrefour also sells pre-peeled and dissected tangerines.
