The Great British Bake Sale! Pub managed by Paul Hollywood’s fiancee where Bake Off star whipped up pizzas could be yours for £1million
- The Chequers Inn is Grade II-listed and on the market for a cool £999,995
A Grade II-listed pub run by Paul Hollywood’s fiancée where the Bake Off star once whipped up some pizzas has been put on the market for nearly £1 million.
The Chequers Inn in Smarden near Ashford, Kent, has been owned by the Spalding family for several years – including landlady Melissa Spalding who has been dating the celebrity baker since 2019.
The pub holds a special place in Paul Hollywood’s heart as it is where the couple met when he judged a village baking competition.
But the historic site – which dates back to the 15th century and is a Grade II-listed former coaching inn – has now been listed for £999,995.

Hollywood, who lives in the village of Smarden, met Ms Spalding at the pub four years ago.
Before lockdown in 2020, the Great British Bake Off star judged a village baking event held at the venue to raise money for Smarden Parish Council.

Fans crammed into the cosy hostelry to get a glimpse of the 57-year-old, who was searching for the village star baker.
The TV star originally from Merseyside is said to have ‘quietly’ proposed to the 38-year-old landlady last April.
The venue has seven rooms, a 35-cover bar, a 37-cover restaurant with a pizza oven, and a large two-bedroom owner’s accommodation.
In 2019, the Chequers Inn bagged a triple win of accolades by winning the TripAdvisor excellence award and then made it into the AA Guide ‘pick of the pubs’.
Last month the pub took on new head chef Ollie Brown, who was previously the sous chef at The Hand and Flowers in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, which has two Michelin stars.
However, Paul himself has also cooked there as a surprise to local punters.
In 2021, the TV personality was announced as the ‘night chef’ in a since-deleted Facebook post.

His younger partner’s parents, who own the hotspot, wrote: ‘Delicious authentic Italian pizzas cooked fresh to order!! Our chefs for the night will be Scott Spalding and Paul Hollywood.’
Pictures taken from the memorable night showed Paul and Scott working the pizza ovens like seasoned pros.
The pair reportedly created a £13 masterpiece boasting tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto, Parmesan and cream.
An onlooker told The Sun: ‘The restaurant was busy and Paul seemed to be a hit with customers.’
