Rishi Sunak and Ursula von der Leyen this evening shook hands on a new Brexit package for Northern Ireland following months of negotiations.

The Prime Minister said he had achieved a ‘decisive breakthrough’ with the EU chief and forged a ‘Windsor Framework’ – named after the location of their talks. 

He has promised a ‘smooth flow of trade’ between mainland Britain and Northern Ireland, with UK VAT, customs and medicines rules applying in the province. 

The new package will include the introduction of red and green customs lanes to split goods destined for domestic consumption from those going on to Ireland within the EU – helping to reduce the impact of checks.
