A man who grew up in the UK is awaiting execution in the US after he was convicted of murdering 11 people and sexually torturing his victims.

Charles Ng counts two baby boys, six men and three women among his victims, killing them all between 1984 to 1985 along with his partner Leonard Lake.

Ng was born in Hong Kong in 1960 to a rich businessman, but had a tough upbringing.

The youngest of three, Ng faced harsh discipline, and even abuse, at the hands of his father. In childhood and his teenage years, he was expelled from several schools and eventually arrested at 15 for shoplifting.

His antics prompted his father to send him off to Bentham Grammar School in North Yorkshire, after briefly staying with relatives in New Longton, near Preston, the Mirror reports.

But it was not to last, as Ng was found to be stealing from other pupils and was shortly expelled from Bentham and sent back to Hong Kong.

Ng moved to the US in 1978 and joined the US Marines there – but this venture was short-lived too after he and three other soldiers raided a weapons depot while stationed in Hawaii.

The disgraced marine fled court-martial to Northern California, where he met his future partner-in-crime Lake through a nuclear disaster survivalist advert Lake had placed in a magazine.

In 1982, authorities raided the pair's home and found stored weapons and explosives, landing Ng, who was already wanted by the military, behind bars, while Lake dodged prison.

The pair were reunited after Ng's prison stint and Lake, convinced that nuclear Armaggeddon was just around the corner, built a bunker to protect them from the impending disaster.

However, the pair used it as a dungeon for the sexual torture of their kidnapped murder victims instead.

According to court reports, Lake and Ng would murder the babies and men they had kidnapped immediately – while women would be subjected to periods of gruesome torture before they finally met their end.

The pair filmed these cruel rituals, telling one victim: "You can scream like the rest of them but it won’t do you any good."

In 1999 it was reported that police had found around 18kg of crushed human bone fragments and charred remains.

Although the pair are responsible for 11 confirmed murders, it is thought the real number could be up to 25 after authorities found two buckets buried on Ng and Lake's property – with one containing envelopes with the names and victims' identifications enclosed.

Lake killed himself with cyanide after he was arrested in 1985 in a shoplifting incident.

Ng fled to Canada following his partner's death and tried to keep a low profile, but it wasn't long before his evil ways outed him once again as he shot a security guard while attempting to shoplift.

In 1991 Ng was finally extradited back to the US and seven years later, in 1998, was handed a death sentence for his crimes.

Ng has appealed his case many times over the years, with his case costing the State of California about £16.4 million in total.

Last month the California Supreme Court upheld the decision to execute Ng after yet another appeal – but he still has the ability to appeal again.
