Sydney Powerball ticket worth $53 million goes unclaimed
The hunt is on for a lottery ticket holder from Sydney’s west who is likely heading to work on Friday unaware they have won more than $53 million in Thursday night’s record $160 million Powerball.
The mystery multimillionaire purchased the ticket at a NSW Lotteries outlet in Penrith but did not register the ticket online, meaning officials have no way of contacting the winner to let them know of their division-one win.
The Lott spokesperson James Eddy said this means officials must sit back and wait until the person checks their tickets and discovers the news themselves.
For privacy reasons, the specific outlet where the winning ticket was purchased won’t be identified until Saturday in hopes the winner will soon come forward.
The NSW winner is just one of three division-one prize winners of Thursday night’s $160 million jackpot which marked the biggest in the nation’s history.
The other two winners – who are both now exactly $53,333,333.34 richer – were from Victoria and Western Australia.
“Of course, we were hoping to reach out to all of our division one winners to break the incredible news, but unfortunately, we will have to wait for our New South Wales winner to come forward,” Eddy said.
“There are 53 million reasons why all New South Wales players who had an entry into tonight’s draw should check their tickets.”
After eventually discovering their win, the Penrith winner will need to contact officials to begin the prize claim process.
The winning numbers were 10, 4, 12, 18, 2, 34 and 7. The Powerball number was 7.
A blue-collar worker from Clyde in south-east Melbourne has been identified as the winner from Victoria. He said he would be immediately retiring with the money.
The man, who did not wish to be identified, was having a quiet night at home when he received the life-changing call. He purchased the ticket online and was immediately contacted after the numbers were drawn.
“My family is set. My grandson wanted a dog for Christmas and I was trying to organise it for him. He can have all the dogs in the world now,” he said after being told of his win.
Along with the three division-one winners, there were also more than 6.5 million prizes worth more than $117 million in divisions two to nine.
Among those were 42 division-two winners who each took home a $77,258.20 prize.
