Teen charged after fatal Hume Highway truck collision

A 14-year-old girl has been charged for her involvement in a car crash on the Hume Highway that killed a teenage passenger.

The Benalla girl was charged with dangerous driving causing death after the vehicle she was travelling in was involved in a collision with a truck near Locksley about 8.30am on Wednesday.

Police said the teenage driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to hospital under guard on Wednesday.

Montana Russell, 15, a passenger who was travelling with the teenager, died at the scene. The pair were reported to be travelling in a vehicle taken from a driveway near Wangaratta on Tuesday night.

A 12-year-old boy was also flown to hospital on Wednesday to be treated for minor injuries.

The Benalla teenager was bailed on Thursday and will face a children’s court at a later date.
