Tenerife tourists are spotted reserving sunbeds at 6.30am despite hotel’s pool not opening for another three-and-a-half hours – as management warns it is looking for ‘solutions’

Holidaymakers in Tenerife have been slammed as ‘sunbed warriors’ after they were spotted laying out loungers at 6.30am – three-and-a-half hours before the pool was due to open.

Dad-of-two Matthew Vine, 46, was stunned when he was sat having a coffee on the balcony and spotted keen sunbathers preparing their beds.

He filmed guests brazenly dragging the beds away from where they were chained up overnight to reserve their perfect spot for the day, and urged the early risers to ‘go back to bed’.

Matthew was on a two-week holiday in Puerto De Santiago, Tenerife, Spain, in June, with his wife, Sarah, 46, a waitress, and his two children – Charlie, 11, and Holly, seven.

He said this was a daily occurrence on their break at the Globales Suneo Tamaimo Tropical hotel, where staff have vowed to try and find ‘solutions’ to restore order.

Matthew, a company director, from Wetherby, West Yorks., said: ‘It was massive – there were two pools and plenty of sunbeds.

‘When we went down around 9am there were still plenty of beds to go around.

‘I took the video around 6.30am when people started to lay out their beds – which were still chained up at the time.

‘I never did it, but I did enjoy laughing at them – why not just wait?

‘I think they see one do it and panic sets in – suddenly they’re all doing it.’

A representative of the hotel said: ‘It is forbidden to reserve sunbeds in all our hotels, it is verbally indicated to guests when checking in, and in the sunbathing areas it is also indicated with signs.

‘We are doing our best, including measures such as the one you can see in the video, chaining sunbeds so that people do not come to book sunbeds at unseemly hours despite the fact that we have enough sunbeds.

No compromise: Holidaymakers made the dash to claim the best sunbeds ahead of their opponents 

‘This is not a problem unique to our hotel, but is repeated in many hotels.

‘We are looking for solutions to this problem that do not cause even bigger problems, although all this would not be necessary if people took heed of our indications.’

Holidaymakers across Spanish resorts this summer have been fighting for poolside sunbeds in an increasingly documented phenomenon on TikTok.

In Mallorca, TikToker John McGowan filmed what he called the ‘towel police’ taking revenge on hotel guests who had tried to reserve sunbeds.

The staff member appeared fed up as he swiftly clears away towels and inflatables used to hog beds by the pool at the Viva resort on the Spanish island.

It is generally accepted in Spanish resorts that a towel left on a sunbed is claimed by its owner for the entire day. 

The origin of this rule is not known, though it is thought to be a German invention. 

But now desperate attempts to secure the perfect sunbathing spot appear to have got out of hand, with tourists running for the deckchairs  and even leaving their towels in ‘queues’.

Brits armed with swimming togs and sun cream raced past rival holidaymakers with a grim determination to secure their place in the sun for a day.

Some are reported to have queued for 90 minutes first thing in the morning – waiting for some unknown signal before stampeding past their fellow tourists for the best sun loungers.

Meanwhile, at the Camp de Mar in Majorca a holidaymaker was shocked to see next-level towel reservation after sunbed hogs puts their towels down on the floor at the entrance to the pool area.

Photos show beach bags and towels placed in an orderly queue leading to the closed-off pool area so hotel guests can secure their sun bed the moment that it opens.
