The way to a woman’s heart? Forget candle-lit dinner and romantic weekend breaks… enunciate your letter Ts!
- Research shows women are more interested in men who pronounce their Ts
- Pace University, New York, surveyed 45 women who listened to 80 male voices
Forget candle-lit dinners and romantic weekend breaks. The way to a woman’s heart for any love-sick man is much simpler – enunciate the letter T.
Research by psychologists in the US shows women are much more interested in forming long-term relationships with English-speaking men if they pronounce the letter T properly in words such as boat, boot, bait or but.
Those who don’t are much less likely to be seen as a potential partner for life.
The findings, by a team of experts led by psychologists at Pace University in New York, also reveal men who enunciate distinctly are seen as having greater social standing by other men.
The US team recruited 45 heterosexual women in their twenties and asked them to listen to voice recordings from 80 different men.

The results, in the journal Scientific Reports, showed the women were more likely to opt for well-spoken men when it came to choosing a longer-term mate.
The theory is that clear pronunciation is seen by some singletons as a marker for higher socio-economic status, suggesting a better quality of life for anyone entering into a relationship with that person.
