Two workers have been killed in a construction accident at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the airport, said the two workers got trapped under construction rubble around 11am.
A spokesman for the city Fire Department said it happened in a trench near the airport’s busy Terminal 7.
About 60 firefighters worked to remove the workers from the trench, the Fire Department said, but found the workers had died after being buried under the debris.
Both workers were pronounced dead at the scene. The names of the two workers have not been released, pending notification of their families, officials said.

‘Due to ongoing emergency activity, please expect roadway delays in vicinity of Terminals 5 and 7 at JFK Airport,’ the airport said in a tweet yesterday following the incident.
It later tweeted that passengers would be forced to take alternative routes to reach terminals to avoid the scene of the emergency.
‘Due to heavy traffic at Terminal 5, departing passengers are recommended access Terminal 5 via free AirTrain from Lefferts Blvd or Federal Circle Stations,’ the airport later tweeted.
The Port Authority said in a news release last night that it will conduct a thorough investigation. Flight operations were not affected, the authority said.
