A Ukrainian refugee who was dumped by her Yorkshire lover after he left his family has admitted biting a policeman.

Sofiia Karkadym, 23, pleaded guilty to the charge when she appeared at Bradford Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Karkadym made headlines last year when she began a romance with Tony Garnett, 30.

He left his partner of 10 years and two children to be with her after the family took her in as a refugee.

Sofiia Karkadym, 23, (pictured with her former lover Tony Garnett, 29, last July) turned up at court 24 hours after a judge issued a warrant following her non-appearance on charges of assaulting a policeman

Bradford Magistrates’ Court confirmed that Soffia, of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty to the charge of assault by beating of an emergency worker when she appeared in court.

Karkadym was staying at her ex’s flat on Grape Street, Bradford, West Yorkshire when PC Andrew Jordinson and colleagues attended the property ahead of the alleged assault.

During the visit PC Jordinson was bitten and Karkadym was charged with a Section 39 Assault and a Section 1 Assault on an emergency worker.

She had flown back to the UK to attend the case , but is believed to have encountered travel delays on the railways.

On Monday at Bradford Magistrates Court District Judge Boyd issued a warrant without bail after Karkadym’s barrister Celine Khan that day told the court she had not arrived.

Her guilty plea appears to be the final twist in a love story beyond borders that had kept romance fans captivated around the world.

In December Tony flew to war-torn Ukraine to rekindle his relationship with Karkadym.

They had split after rowing over her drunken outbursts.

In an exclusive interview with MailOnline, he told how he wanted to give their relationship another chance after a ten-week split.

He said: ‘I think we can make this work. She’s a really attractive woman and always has interesting stuff to talk about. I want to know her much better and this time we will take things slower.’

He was branded a love rat when he and Sofiia left his family home just ten days after she fled from Russia’s invasion and started living with him and Lorna, the mother of his two daughters.

The couple moved into a rented love nest cottage in Bradford, but their relationship soured as Tony accused Sofiia of being repeatedly drunk and abusive.

He claimed that her heavy drinking and jealousy over his two daughters fuelled arguments between them.

Heavily-tattooed Tony finally threw out his young lover last October after she allegedly rammed a knife into their kitchen wall during one row and they had a furious bust-up as they celebrated his 30th birthday.

Sofiia ended up being arrested by police for harassment after ignoring orders to stay away from him and returning to their home to plead with him to have her back.

She tearfully went back Ukraine with her initial refugee status expiring, as Tony told MailOnline how his relationship with her had been ‘a huge mistake’.

But the couple kept in touch with regular video phone calls and Tony decided to go and see her in Ukraine.

He flew to Poland and boarded a bus to cross the border before arriving a few hours later at her family home in a village a few hours from Lviv.

At the time they rekindled their romance and returned to live together in Yorkshire.

Tony said: ‘To be honest I had missed her and my anger over her drinking had subsided.

‘She promised me she would never touch alcohol again and since that day I got to Ukraine to see her she hasn’t touched any drink. And she hasn’t back in Yorkshire either.

‘I knew that it was very tough for her leaving her family and her country and arriving in Bradford and drink was something she turned to.’

He said he and Sofiia talked things through with her parents and her grandmother who showered him with affection and cooked for him every day.

Tony added: ‘The welcome I got from her family was incredible. I could now see again the qualities in Sofiia from the good nature of her relatives.

‘She is from a very nice family and they are all very loving. They have put their trust in me to look after their daughter and that is what I will do. I have given them my promise.’
