Urgent pet warning of unlimited fines or JAIL for not grooming your dog properly after RSPCA notice to owners | The Sun

THE RSPCA has issued an urgent warning to dog owners to look after their fur properly or face heavy fines and potentially jail time.

The animal welfare agency warned that four popular dog breeds require regular washing, clipping and grooming or it can become a serious welfare concern.

The Western Australian branch of RSPCA released shocking images on Wednesday of a badly treated Maltese-cross, who had 700g of matted fur.

Lucas' condition was so severe that vets spent over an hour removing the tangled mess riddled with grass seeds from his body.

RSPCA manager, Kylie Green, stated that Lucas was only one of many long-haired dogs that had faced mistreatment in this way.

"We're seeing more dogs with terribly overgrown coats that point to many months without grooming," she told Perth Now.

Dog breeds that need particularly careful grooming are poodle and poodle crosses, including Maltese-crosses, Bichon Frisé and Cavalier spaniel breeds.

"RSPCA WA currently has two Maltese crosses, two Lhasa Apsos and an elderly toy poodle in care who were in such poor condition that we're looking at prosecuting their owners for animal cruelty.

"It's not just about looks — when a dog's fur gets long and matted it can lead to discomfort, pain, restricted movement and eye, ear or skin infections.

"All dogs require washing and grooming, and ignoring these needs in a high-care breed can quickly become a welfare concern."

Instead the group warns canine owners that they should not own these breeds if they can't take proper care of them.

Green added: "This is a cost and time commitment that owners need to factor in before they commit one of these popular breeds.

“If you are struggling to care for your animal, reach out to friends, family, or a rescue group like RSPCA WA before things get out of hand.

"Please don’t let your pet suffer.”

Four-year-old Lucas is still recovering and will soon be listed for adoption to find him a new home.

In the UK, the government requires dog owners to "carefully check your dog's coat regularly and, as necessary, groom your dog to maintain a healthy coat."

Anyone who commits crimes against animals can face an unlimited fine or six months in prison and may be banned from owning animals in the future.

For the most serious offences, pet owners can face up to five years behind bars.

How to care for your pet

Pet owners must ensure any animal you own:

  • has a proper diet and fresh water
  • has somewhere suitable to live
  • is kept with or away from other animals, depending on its needs
  • is allowed to express itself and behave normally
  • is protected from, and treated for, illness and injury

And, you have to be 16 years old to buy an animal.
