The Al Qaeda leader has been on the FBI's most wanted list since 1998 for his role in the bombings of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya.
He was also known to be second in command to Osama Bin Laden and was believed to have played an integral role in the 9/11 terrorist attack.
The FBI had offered a reward of $25million to anyone who had information about Zawahiri's whereabouts but on August 1, their search came to an end.
The drone strike was carried out after intense strategic planning from top military officials to ensure there were no civilian casualties, including Zawahiri's family, Biden told reporters.

Two missiles from the drone air strike were launched into Zawahiri's balcony, hitting the intended target.
Family members who were in other areas of the home were not harmed, National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby told CNN.
Speaking from the White House, Biden said Zawahiri's death provides "one more measure of closure" for those affected by the 9/11 attacks.
"[Zawahiri] will never again, never again, allow Afghanistan to become a terrorist safe haven because he is gone and we’re going to make sure that nothing else happens," Biden said, adding, "This terrorist leader is no more."
Was Joe Biden diagnosed with Covid-19 rebound?
Biden has encountered an array of health problems since he returned from his trip to Israel.
Reuter's White House reporter Jarrett Renshaw reported that Biden tested positive for Covid-19.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden had begun taking Paxlovid to fight off the virus.
"He has begun taking Paxlovid. Consistent with CDC guidelines, he will isolate at the White House and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time," the White House said in a statement.
On Thursday, July 21, Biden took to social media to share a 21-second video of himself saying: "Hey folks, guess you heard. This morning I tested positive for COVID, but I’ve been double vaccinated and double boosted. Symptoms are mild.”
He reassured Americans that he is recovering and he will be fine.
Biden’s physician, Dr Kevin O’Connor, wrote: "[Biden's] symptoms remain characterized as rhinorrhea (‘runny nose’) and fatigue, with an occasional non-productive, now ‘loose’ cough.
"His voice is deeper this morning. His pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation remain entirely normal, on room air."
Less than one week later, Biden tested positive for Covid-19, once again, according to O'Connor.
"President Joe Biden has tested positive (again) for Covid-19, per a letter from Dr. Kevin O'Connor, in what the doctor says is likely a 'rebound' Covid positivity 'observed in a small percentage of patients treated with Paxlovid,'" CNN White House reporter, DJ Judd wrote on Twitter.
The letter states that the president "continues to feel quite well" and that "there is no reason to reinitiate treatment at this time."
Biden also took to Twitter to update the country, writing: "Folks, today I tested positive for COVID again. This happens with a small minority of folks.
"I’ve got no symptoms but I am going to isolate for the safety of everyone around me. I’m still at work, and will be back on the road soon."
