Who is Tetsuya Yamagami? | The Sun

A PRIME suspect in the shooting of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was apprehended on July 7, 2022.

Abe was campaigning for a parliamentary election when he was allegedly shot by Tetsuya Yamagami.

Yamagami is a 41-year-old man from Nara who worked at the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force for three years before leaving the job in 2005.

His reasons for shooting the former prime minister are still unknown.

Yamagami reportedly told authorities he "aimed to kill" when he fired his gun at Abe, causing him to go into a state of cardiac arrest.

Bystanders heard two shots go off and Abe collapsed with a gunshot to the left side of his chest and his neck.

Abe later died at the hospital and Yamagami was arrested at the scene.

Japanese police say Yamagami allegedly had "no grudge against Abe's political beliefs."
