A 20-year-old woman was killed after falling onto the subway tracks at New York City’s Grand Central Station after a conductor was unable to stop in time as the train pulled into the station.

The woman, who is still unidentified, was fatally struck by an incoming southbound 7 train shortly before 11pm on Tuesday, according to the NYPD.

Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name, as it is pending family notification, the NYPD told DailyMail.com on Wednesday.

The train operator reportedly tried to stop the train before hitting the woman, but was unable to break in time, cops told the New York Post.

Firefighters and EMTs tried to help the woman out from under the train, but she was pronounced dead about an hour later, the New York Post reported.

Firefighters were seen rushing toward the scene in the subway tunnels

They were unable to get the woman out before she died and she was pronounced dead around an hour after the incident

Several firefighters were pictured laying on the platform, reaching between the silver subway car and the bright yellow safety strip of the platform with medical equipment scattered on the ground.

Shortly after police arrived to the scene, the power was cut off from the train tracks, according to Citizen.

It is unclear how the woman fell onto the tracks, but NBC New York reported that no criminality is suspected.

The 7 train was suspended in both directions for a portion of the tracks as emergencies teams work diligently to help the woman

It is also unclear how the FDNY managed to get her body out from under the train.

The 7 train was delayed in both directions due to the tragic incident and was temporarily suspended between 34 St-Hudson Yards and Hunters Point Avenue.

There are currently no active delays on the 7 train route as of Wednesday morning.
