Alison and Dermots This Morning routine explained from box of bacon to silly selfies

Fridays are about to be filled with laughter again, as Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond return to the This Morning sofa for their weekly presenting slot.

The pair hosted the show for two weeks in July before heading off for a summer break.

“We have so much fun together that doing it every day for those two weeks was a blast,” laughs Dermot, 49.

Their return promises to feature more celebrity chats, great guests and giggles aplenty from the pair, who no longer have to sit far apart as they did during the height of Covid.

“It’s so lovely to be free and to be sitting closer together now,” says Alison, 47.

Here, the co-hosts reveal what they got up to this summer, what it’s like working together on This Morning and exactly what they privately message each other when they are apart…

Hi, both! What did you do with your time off this summer?

Alison: I went to Disney in America with my son Aiden, we had been really looking forward to that – such fun.

Dermot: I’ve been doing my house up.

Alison: I said to Dermot he and the family could move into my house while it’s being done.

Dermot: Along with all the other people living there… her house is like a manger! She takes in every waif and stray.

What do you miss about each other when you’re not filming?

Alison: The familiarity. He’s the longest boyfriend I’ve had in my life.

Dermot: Yeah, you do miss the camaraderie, especially in the make-up room at the start of the day – that trust and knowing that we take the p**s out of each other, but we love each other. I just love coming to work and doing live telly, and now we’ve got to know each other more intimately.

Alison: Not too intimately, babes!

Is it a shock getting back into the early morning routine of filming This Morning?

Alison: Yeah, it does take a while! I remember last September and feeling like we’re starting again. I was getting butterflies. I remember thinking, “Do I still know what I’m doing?” There’s lots going on in your earpiece and it’s getting used to that again.

Dermot: Yeah, there is a little feeling, but I guess it’s all about the prep as well that helps.

Alison: You cannot come to this place without being prepped. As soon as you arrive, every department needs a piece of you [before going on air], so you have to do the prep beforehand. The minute you drop your guard, the minute the show goes off the rails – and we do sometimes go off the rails – in a fun way!

Dermot: The key is to know where you’re going! And Andi Peters instilled that in me when I was at T4. He’d say, “Have fun, do what you want, but always remember where you’re going”, so you can steer it back.

What’s the first thing you do when you arrive at the studio?

Alison: I have a bottle of water and because I usually arrive first, I get us both a green juice – a mix of kiwi, spinach, apple and ginger – and order Dermot his box of bacon!

Dermot: Not every day, but now and then we’ll have a box of streaky bacon rashers that we share around. We do have a little routine going and I trust Alison to choose me a good juice mix. The moments in the make-up room together are really special – we love catching up before the show.

Alison: Yeah. And as time has gone on we now seem to know what each other is thinking. I know what stories he’d like to discuss during the news review, for example. It’s lovely getting to know a friend more and more.

Do you send each other messages when you’re not at work?

Dermot: It’s usually all just silly stuff. All rubbish! Normally gossip and fun.

Alison: I usually send him lots of selfies of me! And food recipes, funny gifs… This gif of a girl falling asleep was sent because he knows when we get sent the briefs for the show, sometimes they come through quite late the night before and I’ve been known to fall asleep reading them!

This Morning is nominated for best daytime series at the National Television Awards this month, and Alison is nominated for Best Presenter. Are you excited?

Dermot: The thing with awards is that you desperately want to win them, but you can’t use them for validation. If you don’t win them, you don’t win them, it is what it is.

Alison: We all know that this show is wonderful regardless. I love the NTAs because it’s the viewers who have voted for you. It does mean a lot, I’m not gonna lie. I would like to win, but like Dermot said, it can’t be the be all and end all. I’m not sure yet what I’ll be wearing though, I usually get my stylist David to help.

Dermot: Luckily I have an arsenal of top suits to choose from after years of hosting the NTAs!

Alison and Dermot return to This Morning on Friday, 9 September at 10am on ITV
