Amanda Holden discusses her relationship with Les Dennis after speaking of ‘dark time’

Media personality Amanda Holden has opened up about her relationship with ex-husband Les Dennis while discussing their age gap.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge married comedian Les Dennis in 1995, but five years later endured a very public separation, after her affair with co-star Neil Morrisey. The five week long fling had begun whilst filming together on the set of theBBCfilm, Happy Birthday Shakespeare, but ultimately lead to the downfall of Amanda’s marriage.

Although they briefly reconciled, they announced they had split for good in 2002.

Amanda was 24 when she married Les, who was 42 at the time. Speaking about the age gap in an interview with The Times, the mum-of-two was asked whether had been looking for a sort of father figure in Les.

She said: “I don’t know because I’ve never done therapy, but there is a sort of safety in a relationship like that.

"I was very young and I had a lot to learn about life."

Previously opening up about the marriage and her affair, Amanda told the Mail: “I brought it on myself, I appreciate that, but nothing will ever be as bad again.

“It was a very dark time. It got to the point where I felt I could hardly breathe. Les proved to be my saviour. Ironically. So the person I’d hurt the most in the world was the one who was there for me.”

Les previously took a playful swipe at the affair when he appeared as a guest on Christopher Biggins’ podcast Show and Tell.

When talking about his time in pantos alongside late American actor Mickey Rooney, Les told Christopher that the actor used to irate whenever Frank Sinatra’s Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas would play, saying: “Mickey would get very angry, because of course, Frank Sinatra ran off with Ava Gardner (Mickey's wife).

'It would've been like me having to listen to Bob The Builder every night.” The swipe referred to the fact Neil Morrisey voiced Bob The Builder on the children’s show for 14 years.

Amanda opened up about her affair with Neil, telling Good Housekeeping in 2013: "I don't believe women have affairs for no reason.

"Neil rightly or wrongly got loads of stick. I feel like it was my fault – I was the one who was married.

"I want to change the general perception of him, as he was very caring and very loving and very worried about me because I lost so much weight. He used to cook for me and look after me and babysit the dogs."

Amanda is now married to record producer husband Chris, with who she shares daughters Lexi, 17, and Hollie, 11.
