Ariana Grande hits back at body shamers in rare statement and urges fans to ‘be gentle’
After being the subject of body shaming, singer Ariana Grande took to social media in a rare statement to urge people to “be gentle” to one another
The singer-songwriter, 29, said in a social media video that she “wanted to address” concerns about her body that the public have been talking about for a “decade or longer”.
Ariana spoke on TikTok and told fans: “I think we should be gentler and less comfortable commenting on people's bodies, no matter what.
"If you think you're saying something good or well-intentioned, whatever it is, healthy or unhealthy, big or small, this or that, sexy or not sexy, we should really work towards not doing that as much.
"There are ways to compliment someone or to ignore something you see that you don't like. I think we should help each other work towards just being safer and keeping each other safer."
The singer then candidly opened up about the “unhealthiest version” of herself that people have been comparing her current body to.
Ariana stated: “Personally for me, the body that you've been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body.
"I was on a lot of anti-depressants and drinking on them and eating poorly and at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider my healthy, but that in fact wasn't my healthy."
She stated that there are many ways to look beautiful and healthy and that she hoped something good can come from her being open with her fans.
Ariana continued: “You never know what someone is going through so even if you're coming from a loving place or a caring place, that person probably is working on it or has a support system that they're working on it with.
"Sending you guys a lot of love and I think you're beautiful no matter what you're going through, no matter what weight, no matter how you like to do your makeup these days, no matter what cosmetic procedures you've had or not or anything."
The video was quickly flooded with fan’s comments supporting Ariana’s message. One appreciative fan wrote: “Absolutely love this. No one deserves to have their body commented on especially when you don’t truly know the person. Thank you Ariana."
Another commented: “You shouldn't have to explain yourself, no good comes from commenting on people’s bodies love u”, while a third wrote: "Moral of the story is don’t speak on someone else’s body period whether you’re concerned or not”.
Ariana, who is also an actress, is set to star as Glinda Upland in the upcoming Wicked film based on the hit musical of the same name that is inspired by L Frank Baum’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Her last album was Positions, her sixth record, released in October 2020, which was a British number one.
