As Elon Musk reinstates Donald Trump's Twitter account, see how Hollywood reacted when the former president was banned in 2021

On Nov. 19, 2022, new Twitter owner Elon Musk announced his decision to reinstate former President Donald Trump’s Twitter account after an informal poll on the social media site showed that 52% of those who voted were in favor. Previous Twitter leadership, of course, had permanently banned the politician from the platform — which had long been his favorite way to communicate — on Jan. 8, 2021, following the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. That banning came days after the then-outgoing president failed to admonish his supporters as they stormed the Capitol, even telling him he “loved” them. Twitter explained that the “risk of further incitement of violence” was behind the decision at the time. Following the stunning announcement, Hollywood, which is largely liberal, reacted with joy on, well, Twitter. After being banned from Twitter, the president suddenly tried using the official @POTUS account — but those tweets were quickly taken down. “As I have been saying for a long time, Twitter has gone further and further in banning free speech, and tonight, Twitter employees have coordinated with the Democrats and Radical Left in removing my account from their platform, to silence me — and YOU, the 75,000,000 great patriots who voted for me.” Donald Trump wrote, according to screengrabs captured by various media outlets. “Twitter may be a private company, but without the government’s gift of Section 230 they would not exist for long.
