'Awful' film panned on Rotten Tomatoes in 2017 reaches no1
Netflix viewers shocked as ‘awful’ 2017 Rotten Tomatoes flop rises to number one on the most-watched list
Netflix viewers were shocked after a 2017 Rotten Tomatoes flop rose to number one on the streaming service’s most-watched list this week.
The Snowman, which featured Michael Fassbender as the protagonist, was directed by Tomas Alfredson and an adaptation of the novel by Jo Nesbo.
In the film, Detective Harry Hole (Fassbender) investigated the disappearance of a woman in early winter and realised that the case may be related to a snowman.
The film cost $34million (£27million) to make but had profits of just $6.7million (£5.4million) in the US and was rated at 6 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite the movie being panned at the time, it has risen through the ranks on the streaming service’s website six years later.

Surprise hit: Despite the movie being panned at the time, it has risen through the ranks on the streaming service’s website as new people tune in (pictured: Rebecca Ferguson in the movie)
However, some people have been left bemused by the film’s new-found popularity and have taken to Twitter to slam the movie.
One person wrote: ‘I tried to watch this cause I heard it was hilariously bad but mostly it was just very dull. Disappointing.’
Another said: ‘Don’t watch The Snowman on Netflix. Really dumb.’
A third penned: ‘The Snowman (2017) is the No1 movie on Netflix right now, which is truly shocking.
‘I will never forget seeing it in the theatre and legit thinking I like passed out or something because it made no sense by the end.
‘Looked it up and roughly 15% of the script was never filmed!!!!’
But some people praised the film, despite it being labelled ‘the worst film of 2017.’
One person wrote: ‘The Snowman is the No1 movie in Netflix. I don’t think this movie gets enough credit.’

Another said: ‘The Snowman on Netflix is a great watch’ and a third added: ‘I’m hype they got the snowman on Netflix I love this movie.’
Speaking to Event magazine in 2019, author Nesbo said of the film: ‘I was on a climbing trip in Greece, so I wasn’t here for the premiere.
‘I read the reviews so I decided I didn’t need to see it. I still haven’t. The movie is not the book.’
‘Is there any consolation in that? ‘Yes, but it could have been a version very true to the book.
‘There are many great movies that are true to the novels.’
The film was panned by critic Brian Viner in 2017, who, writing for the Daily Mail, said: ‘Alfredson tries hard — at times too hard — to make his film distinctive.
‘It’s both extremely gruesome, and, in its use of the Norwegian landscape, rather beautiful. And it has an undeniably classy cast.
‘Alongside Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, J. K. Simmons, Val Kilmer, Chloe Sevigny, an under-used Toby Jones and an even more under-used Anne Reid all do their best to straighten out the convoluted story.
‘Mind you, just when you think you know what’s going on and who has done what to whom, Alfredson dangles yet another red herring.’
Not all bad: But some people praised the film and seemed to enjoy it, despite it being labelled ‘the worst film of 2017’
