BBC newsreader Lucy Owen nearly loses vision as she’s rushed to hospital

“[They] stopped me losing sight in my eye with surgery for a detached retina.”

Lucy continued: “Very grateful to my optician who spotted it and rushed me in. Diolch all. Keep an eye on yours too.”

The author revealed that she would not regain her sight for a few months and had been ordered to lie on her side while on bed rest.

The NHS describes retinal detachment as the thin layer of the back of the eye becoming loose.

To prevent the person from going blind, surgery is needed to ensure that the oxygen supply to the eye is not lost.

Recovery time following surgery varies, often between two to six weeks and can result in blurry vision and sore and red eyes.

The mother-of-one presents BBC Wales Today and is also known for hosting X-Ray, the consumer rights show.

Many of her 33,000 followers responded to the news, with two writing: “God Lucy I hope you are OK,” and: “Must have been very painful. Hope all is well.”

Another added: “Oh my goodness Lucy. So lucky your optician noticed it.”

The former X-Ray host followed up with an update where she lay next to her dog smiling with a colourful bouquet.

She stated: “Thanks so much for your lovely messages, so kind of you. Having to lie on my side for a week and won’t get my vision back for a few months – tricky for autocue!”

She continued: “But look what I had from my wonderful Wales Today colleagues. So lucky work with such gorgeous people.”

Fans commented on her picture from today: “Get Well Soon please,” and: “Aaw Lucy – that’s really grim I’m so sorry you have to put up with this… Wishing you a good recovery xx.” (sic)
