Camilla is the King’s ‘companion, friend and lover – he needs her more than she needs him’

Yesterday saw King Charles III and the Queen Consort leave London to return to their respective homes following days of public events paying tribute to The Queen – with Charles having been granted 24 hours to rest ahead of his mother's funeral on Monday.

Reflecting on the tough week the pair have endured, former BBC Royal Correspondent Jennie Bond believes that the new King will depend greatly on his "companion, friend and lover" Camilla in the turbulent months to come.

"It makes me think of Edward the eighth and how he said he could not be the King he would wish to be without the woman he loved by his side," she exclusively told OK! this week. "Charles always includes Camilla in his speeches when he can.

"She’s a couple years older, she's getting older, and I think this must be very physically taxing for her. But I think he depends on her absolutely for support.

"There are few people in King Charles's position. So few people, that he can share his innermost thoughts with."

The couple landed at Camilla's home Ray Mill House before Charles made the 30 minute drive to his private residence in Highgrove.

This marks first time they have separated since travelling to Aberdeenshire's Balmoral Castle to see the Queen last Thursday before she passed away.

Charles is understood to be carrying out some private days of reflection along with his wife of 16 years following the momentous events last week that saw him become King.

Their break from the spotlight is aimed at allowing King Charles to rest and have some time to reflect on the death of his beloved mother.

"Camilla, as the Duke of Edinburgh was to the Queen, is Charles’ stalwart companion, friend and lover," Jennie Bond exclusively tells OK!, speaking of their close relationship. "I think he needs her support.

"I think he needs her more than she needs him, and he would be lost without her. So she's quietly there, isn't she, just trotting along like the kind and affable woman that she is."

The period of private mourning comes after Charles was joined by his three siblings – Princess Anne, and Princes Andrew and Edward – as well as sons Princes William and Harry after they walked in union in procession behind the late Queen's coffin as it travelled from Buckingham Palace yesterday.

Camilla – along with Kate, Princess of Wales, the Countess of Wessex and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex – travelled by car for the moving service before Westminster Hall was opened up for members of the public to pay their respects to the late Queen.
