Carey Mulligan exudes glamour in a strapless black and pink gown at the She Said premiere which sees her star as NYT reporter who’s joint exposé on sex abuser Harvey Weinstein lead to #MeToo movement

• The actress, 37, looked sensational in a strapless black gown which had a striking bright pink panel as she greeted the crowd at the event at London’s Southbank Centre amid the BFI London Film Festival

Carey Mulligan was the picture of glamour on Friday as she led the arrivals at the premiere of her new film She Said, held at the Royal Festival Hall in London’s Southbank Centre.

The actress, 37, looked sensational in a strapless black gown which had a striking bright pink panel as she greeted the crowd at the event amid the BFI London Film Festival. 

Carey oozed confidence in the plunging dress by Giorgio Armani, as she larked around for the cameras before posing up a storm.

The film follows the female New York Times reporters (played by Mulligan and co-star Zoe Kazan) who took on Hollywood producer and convicted sex abuser Harvey Weinstein, which led to the #MeToo movement in 2018.

Carey’s cropped blonde locks were styled into sift waves, while she highlighted her features with a neutral make-up palette.

The Promising Young Woman star was in great spirits as she smiled and waved to fans, before stopping to take photos with her admirers.

Carey also posed alongside the She Said director Maria Schrader, who looked smart in a black trouser suit and silver shoes.

The Maria Schrader-directed feature follows NYT journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, who published a report about Weinstein, 70, in October 2017 that detailed decades of sexual abuse by the Hollywood heavyweight ushering in the #MeToo movement.

The New York Times and The New Yorker were awarded the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for their coverage of Weinstein.

Schrader famously directed and won a Primetime Emmy for her work on the 2020 Netflix miniseries Unorthodox.

Brad Pitt, who confronted Weinstein after his then-girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow accused the producer of coming onto her, serves as one of the film’s producers.

‘At that moment, I was just a boy from the Ozarks on the playground and that’s how we confronted things,’ he recalled of his tense one-on-one with Weinstein to CNN.

Two-time Academy Award-winning producers Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner are also attached to the project.

The screenplay was penned by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, who is a renown author and playwright.

She Said will be released in UK cinemas on November 25.

Speaking at the premiere, Carey told how she felt ‘compelled as a woman’ to star in the film.

She explained to PA news agency: ‘I felt compelled as a woman to be part of a story about so much female heroism. I really was so fascinated by Megan, the person I am playing in the film.

‘She’s an investigative journalist, I really couldn’t kind of get into the head of what it was like to be someone who can ring someone up in the middle of the day and say “There is this thing I know about you, will you to tell me and can I tell  everyone.”To build that trust and to be able to have that kind of relationship with people, I think I was so fascinated by who she was as an individual.’

She added of the film’s investigation: ‘I think this is an immense sort of important history lesson in a way, this was a sort of enormous event in our society and although things have changed, there’s so much more to do. We know by reading the news today how much further there is to go in so many parts of the world and even within our own industry, which has had lots of shifts.’

Weinstein’s rape conviction and 23-year-prison sentence was upheld in July by a New York appeals court that rejected the movie mogul’s claims that the judge at his landmark #MeToo trial prejudiced him by allowing women to testify about allegations that weren’t part of the criminal case.

The ruling was issued by a five-judge panel in the state’s intermediate appeals court.

The bombshell decision affirmed the milestone verdict in America’s reckoning with sexual misconduct by powerful figures – an era that began with a flood of allegations against Weinstein.

Weinstein is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence in a California prison and is awaiting trial on charges he assaulted five women in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills from 2004 to 2013.

The trial is set to begin on October 24 and is expected to last several months.
