Corrie star Johnny Briggs’ daughter and granddaughter ‘attacked two women for £20k’
The daughter and granddaughter of late Coronation Street actor Johnny Briggs have been charged with attacking two women as they appeared in court today.
Karen Briggs, 53, and her daughter Emma Beach, 34, attended Guildford Crown Court as they were accused of assaulting Sophia Walton and Amanda Gaye on October 25 2021.
The court heard that the pair, from Cherry Orchard, Stains-upon-Thames, Surrey, also allegedly stole £20k from Ms Gaye amid the attack.
Ms Briggs and Ms Beach both denied the charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault and theft.
The mum and daughter were instructed not to contact the two alleged victims.
Ms Briggs and Ms Beach’s trial date is scheduled for October 16 next year.
Corrie acting legend Johnny died on February 28 2021 aged 85, after a long illness. The episode aired the day after was dedicated to the late star.
Johnny was one of the soap’s long-running iconic characters and appeared in 2,349 episodes, before bowing out in 2006.
At the time of his death, his family announced in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father, Johnny Briggs.
“He passed away peacefully this morning after a long illness, with family by his side. He was 85.
“We politely ask for privacy at this time, so that we can quietly grieve as a family and remember the wonderful times we had with him. Thank you."
Johnny first appeared playing lothario Mike Baldwin on the ITV soap in 1976.
His character suffered Alzheimer’s in his final months and dramatically died in the arms of Ken Barlow on the Cobbles after having a heart attack.
Johnny reappeared as a ghost on Coronation Street in 2012 for a charity special episode.
Tributes to the late actor poured in, after the news of his death circulated on social media.
Actor Colin McFarlane wrote: “Same age as my Dad, I didn’t know he was unwell. Sad news. A true UK soap legend. Sending condolences to his family & friends. May he rest well in Soap heaven”.
Weather presenter Emma Jesson added: “Sad to hear of Johnny Briggs' passing. He was great fun & a real character.
"Good banter when Bill #WilliamRoache & I caught up w his 'love rival' at the golf Classic Rusholme a few years ago. Rest in peace dear chum #JohnnyBriggs God bless, you entertained millions, it was a gift x”.
