Corrie’s Samia Longchambon opens up on trolling in real-life mirror of Maria storyline

Coronation Street star Samia Longchambon has been a Wetherfield favourite since first appearing on the show as then-dog kennel worker Maria Sutherland in 2000 at the age of 17.

The years that followed have seen Samia's character endure a rollercoaster of storylines, and it seems as though Maria's turbulent life shows no signs of settling down.

Despite this, Samia has now opened up to OK! on an unexpected similarity that she currently shares with her on-screen role – online trolling. "I do get negative comments," she told us. "Comments about my appearance cut the most."

The 39-year-old actress and mum-of-two, who turns 40 this week, added: "I think, ‘Is that what people really think of me? Is that really what I look like?’ I’ve got lots of insecurities but I don’t want to point them out.

"It’s difficult to not let it affect my confidence, and I have done over the years. The block button is quite amazing!"

Samia's character Maria has recently discovered that her face had been inserted into a pornographic film – with a creepy guy then approaching her and telling her how much he enjoyed her online video. She then got a notification telling her that her phone was being tracked.

Despite the age gap between her character and her 12-year-old daughter Freya, many of the themes are relevant to teenage girls today and have made Samia – who also shares six-year-old son Yves with professional ice-skater husband Sylvain Longchambon – consider how she would protect her daughter from online harms.

"She’s a bit too young for me to talk about that kind of stuff yet but I always worry about her being online – even on TikTok," she tells OK!.

"I put the parental controls on so she can’t look at things that aren’t suitable for her age but it is really difficult to police it.

"She’s nearly 13 and when she comes in from school and she’s up in her bedroom on her phone… I can’t be with her 24/7.

"She’s quite savvy, to be fair. She knows not to speak to strangers. There’s been the odd occasion where she’s like, ‘This number is ringing me and I don’t know who it is’, so I tell her to block it."
