Corrie’s Valerie Barlow star Anne Reid, 87, spends hours in A&E after breaking arm

Coronation Street star Anne Reid has thanked "brilliant" NHS nurses and doctors after she was forced to visit A&E after breaking her arm.

The actress, 87, who is best known for her role as Valerie Barlow, took to Twitter following her hospital wait, as she thanked NHS staff and gave fans an update on her injury.

She wrote: "Last Thursday night I spent six hours in A&E at @NHSEnglandLDN #UCLH with a broken arm. The nurses and doctors were absolutely brilliant so kind and caring I can't thank them enough."

Friends and fans alike were quick to send their well-wishes to Anne, with fellow actress Bonnie Langford, writing: "Wishing you better soon, Annie xx"

"Sorry to hear about your arm! Thankful you received such good care from amazing professionals. Sending you lots of love & wishes for a smooth recovery. Take care & Merry Christmas!" wrote one fan.

While another added: "They are truly angels with their wings on the inside. Really sorry to hear about your arm and hope it heals as quickly as possible. At least you can eat mince pies with one good arm/hand."

A third commented: "So sorry to hear about your arm Anne but yes thank goodness for the #nhs We must support all those fighting to protect it #NHSStrikes #NursesPayRiseNow Hope you get well soon."

Composer Jason Carr quote-tweeted Anne's tweet, writing: "I’m also grateful to NHS staff this year. #supportnurses And wishing my friend @AnneReidActress a speedy recovery."

Anne made her first appearance as Valerie Tatlock in Corrie in 1961, less than a year since the show began airing, and remained in the cast for a decade before her character's death in 1971.

In 1962 Valerie married Ken Barlow, becoming his first wife, and three years later gave birth to Peter and Susan.

Anne left the show in 1971 after her character was killed off the night before the Barlow's were set to emigrate to Jamaica after Ken accepted a teaching job there.

On the eve of their departure Valerie died after being electrocuted when she plugged a hairdryer into a faulty plug. 18.26 million viewers tuned in to watch the shocking scenes.
