Dan Walker recounts ex-boss ‘closing the door’ in his face
Former BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker has hit out at the BBC, claiming that “things need to change” there as the broadcaster was quizzed on his departure and his decision behind his exit.
It’s been a year since he left behind his job at the corporation to join rival news network Channel 5. And with his ratings up 30 per cent within that year, he spoke to The Mirror to discuss how things have gone since he left the comfort of the BBC Breakfast sofa.
During his interview the 46-year-old discussed how he views the BBC now he’s no longer part of the organisation saying: “I still love the BBC. I watch it, and I’m still a passionate defender of what it does.
“And I think a media landscape without the BBC would be much bleaker. Do things need to change about the BBC? Yes. Do they need to be a bit more up-to-date in the way they do things? Probably.”
During his interview, Dan also commented on how he didn’t miss the BBC saying:
“I miss the people, but I don’t miss the BBC.
“I did all the things that I’d ever dreamed of doing. I had my own football programme. I had my own radio show. I was a host on Breakfast. I did quiz shows. I did Strictly. I did Match of the Day. I did all the things that I would ever dream of as a kid.”

Dan first joined the BBC in 2004 where he worked on a regional news show called North West Tonight. He then took over as the main presenter on BBC Football Focus where he stayed until 2021.
In 2016 he replaced Bill Turnbull on BBC Breakfast where he became a household name before announcing his departure via Twitter in April 2022 and sharing his move to Channel 5.
Dan also competed in the nineteenth series of Strictly Come Dancing where he was partnered with Ukrainian-Slovenian professional Nadiya Bychkova before being eliminated in week 11.

Dan’s career on Channel 5 is going from strength to strength. As well as fronting an hour long special interview with the husband of Nicola Bulley, he also hosted a follow-up series called Vanished which tried to find missing people.
But his latest adventures see him teaming up for a new show with his friend Helen Skelton. Dan & Helen’s Pennine Adventure will follow the pair on their journey across The Pennine Way.
In between his hikes, Dan remains committed to the news and has shared his desire that people will still keep watching his show and other mainstream news channels to get their information.
5 News at 5 airs weekdays on Channel 5.
