Darius Daneshs family face two-month wait for Pop Idol stars cause of death news

The grieving family of former Pop Idol contestant Darius Campbell Danesh may not find out the cause of his death for two months.

Scottish singer and and West End performer Darius, who was 41, was found unresponsive in bed in his apartment room in Rochester, Minnesota, on August 11 and pronounced dead that afternoon.

His death was announced by his family on Tuesday, who said in a statement that local police had confirmed there were "no signs of intent or suspicious circumstances".

"The cause of his sudden death is unknown at this stage while medical examinations continue", the family added.

According to MailOnline, police are awaiting toxicology results which could take up to two months, as part of the investigation into Darius' death.

The publication reported that the apartment where Darius was found is located opposite the Mayo Clinic specialist treatment centre, but it is unclear whether he was being treated there.

The report came after Darius's debut single Colourblind, returned to the top of the charts – almost exactly 20 years after it first reached number one.

Released in August 2002 after Darius finished third on Pop Idol, the hit song re-entered the music charts and landed at number one on the UK iTunes chart.

Darius found fame on the first series of the ITV music competition, which was won by Will Young with Gareth Gates runner-up.

Following the show, Darius famously turned down a record deal with music mogul Simon Cowell, who was one of the judges, and instead signed a deal with hit-making producer Steve Lillywhite.

The 67-year-old, whose has worked with some of the biggest names in music including the Rolling Stones, told the PA news agency that Darius was "as good an example of the human race that you will ever find."

L:illywhite said: "I mean his story is such a great story of redemption.

"You know, how he was basically, he was ridiculed on Pop Idol, he ended up coming third. And there wasn’t a hell of a lot going on for him but what he had was this huge heart.”

Former Pop Idol judges Simon, 62, Pete Waterman and Nicki Chapman, and first series runner-up Gareth, are among the other industry names and celebrities to have paid tribute to Darius following the news.

The singer-songwriter recorded two albums, which included five UK top 10 singles, before going on to forge a successful stage career.

Darius appeared in Chicago as Billy Flynn in two runs of the production, as well as Guys And Dolls, Gone With The Wind and more in the West End.

He also won the first series of ITV’s Popstar To Operastar talent contest in 2010, before landing a major role in a new production of Carmen at London’s O2 Arena.
