‘I want to fly the TARDIS to Africa!’: New Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa discusses role and says he has ‘big shoes to fill’ as he takes over from Jodie Whittaker and returning David Tennant

David Tennant returned to the lead role in Doctor Who on Sunday as Jodie Whittaker bowed out after five years as the Time Lord. 

But in 2023 Ncuti Gatwa take control of the TARDIS following the show’s 60th anniversary special, with viewers getting their first look at him in action a recent teaser. 

And the Sex Education star, 30, took part in an Instagram Q&A on Tuesday to speak about the ‘big shoes’ he will fill and revealed he’d love to fly the time traveller’s police-box to Nigeria.

He said: ‘I would take my TARDIS to Africa, to Nigeria and I would love the Doctor to meet the Orisha,’.

‘They were a set of gods in Nigerian mythology and I think he would have a lovely old time’. 

The Orisha are spirits sent to assist humanity and to teach them to be successful on earth.  Rooted in the native religion of the Yoruba people, Orishas are said to have previously existed in the spirit world before taking on human forms on earth.

Ncuti went on to say about the role: ‘I am so excited, obviously I am daunted, it’s a daunting show and I am following in some big footsteps,’.

However he added: ‘But I can’t wait to put my stamp on the character’.

It comes after David Tennant’s wife Georgia has took to Instagram to share a sweet tribute to the actor after he reprised his role as the titular Time Lord following Jodie Whittaker’s exit.

The actress, who is also the daughter of the Fifth Doctor Peter Davison, shared a cute black-and-white snap with David in matching hats, after his return aired during Doctor Who’s special episode to mark the BBC’s 100th Anniversary on Sunday.

Georgia, who began dating David after they co-starred on Doctor Who together in 2008 before marrying three years later, captioned her post: ‘Daughter of 5. Girlfriend of 10. Wife of 14. #powerofthedoctor.’

The couple, are parents to daughters, Olive, 10, Doris, six, and Birdie, two, and a son, Wilfred, eight, while David also adopted Georgia’s son Ty, 19.

Following David’s return to the Who series, showrunner Russell T Davies confirmed that he is the 14th Doctor, and will appear in a trio of episodes to mark the programme’s 60th Anniversary in 2023.

His return aired during the closing moments of the Centenary Special, sending fans into a tailspin as the Doctor regenerated into a previous incarnation.

The Power of the Doctor was jam-packed with excitement as famous faces returned, Jodie bowed out after five years as the Time Lord, David made his return, and fans were given a first-look at Ncuti in the role.

The much-anticipated episode, titled The Power of the Doctor, pulled in 3.6million average viewers with a peak of 4million, according to new overnight ratings.

Doctor Who returns with its 60th Anniversary Special in November 2023.
