Don’t Worry Darling debuts at the top of box office with $19.2 million in spite of bad reviews and rumors of on-set drama as Avatar re-release builds buzz for the upcoming sequel

Don’t Worry Darling topped the US box office over the weekend earning $19.2 million in its first big screen outing. The thriller, about a utopian 1950s desert community, directed by Olivia Wilde, overcame bad reviews and rumors about behind-the-scenes troubles to come out on top, according to Box Office Mojo. 

The debut is disappointing considering the film, starring Wilde, Harry Styles, Florence Pugh and Chris Pine, cost $35 million to make.

The Woman King, starring Viola Davis, easily captured second place. The historical epic, based on real events, in which the Oscar winner takes the lead, finished with a strong  $11.1 million in ticket sales.

The re-release of Avatar was a big winner for Walt Disney Pictures, scooping up $10 million at the box office and third place. The 2009 fantasy adventure will soon be followed by the highly anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water December 16.

Barbarian, a fright flick about a woman who finds more than she expected after checking in at an Airbnb came in fourth unpacking $4.8 million. Ticket sales for the thriller starring Georgina Campbell and Justin Long were down 26-percent from its debut last week. 

Coming in at number five was another spook fest, Pearl, with $1.91 million dollars. Mia Goth stars as the murderous character she played in X, and this prequel explains how Pearl became so handy with a hatchet.

The comic murder mystery See How They Run, about efforts to turn a hit play into a Hollywood smash, held on with $1.9 million, coming in at number six. 

Bullet Train kept chugging along in seventh place. The ensemble piece, lead by Brad Pitt, about five assassins aboard a fast moving bullet train kept on track with $1.81 million in ticket sales.

Eight place goes to DC League of Super-Pets. The animated adventure about Krypto the super dog and his mission to save Superman from kidnappers is holding strong with the younger generation. The story, which includes some of Hollywood’s biggest names, headlined by Dwayne Johnson, Kate McKinnon and Kevin Hart made more than $1.7 million bucks.

This weekend’s earnings of nearly $1.6 million added to the total tally of  $711,568,000 domestically. 

Minions: The Rise of Gru rounded out the top ten. 

The latest chapter in the Despicable Me franchise held its own, filling seats to the tune of $1.03 million in box office sales.
