It’s a Knockout was first broadcast in 1966 and was subsequently revived at various times in the 80s and 90s.

It usually depicted teams from different parts of the UK wearing ridiculous costumes and taking on a series of bizarre games.

Prince Edward decided to get the Royals involved and – in what turned out to be the last time the show was ever broadcast on BBC – he dreamed up a special Royal Tournament episode.

Sarah, Duchess of York, who shares a Windsor mansion with her ex-husband Prince Andrew, took part.

“Fergie threw a bread roll and it landed on my head,” recalled Hi-de-Hi! star Su Pollard, who also appeared on the 1987 TV game show.

“We had a fabulous time on Prince Edward’s Grand Knockout contest. There literally was a bun fight in the buffet area.

“The organisers were a bit fraught… ‘Oh, God, Fergie just had an iced bun hit her’.

“Princess Anne had lips of string. I think she was a bit taken aback,” she added to MailOnline.

The idea was that four members of the Royal Family would captain teams representing different charities.

The red team was captained by Princess Anne, the yellow team by Prince Edward, the blue team by Sarah Ferguson and the green team, Prince Andrew.

The show was broadcast on the grounds of Alton Towers on June 15, 1987.

The Royals were dressed up to look like medieval Royals – in fancy dress with ridiculous puffy dresses, banners and spongy knights’ costumes.

A host of top celebrities joined the shenanigans including Meat Loaf, Gary Lineker, Tom Jones, Cliff Richard and Jenny Agutter.

The Duchess of York seemed absolutely carried away with the occasion and threw herself into chanting slogans along with her team.

However, when the camera panned to Princess Anne, her look suggested she’d been talked into this against her will.

It all came as a bit of a shock and lots of people thought it really demeaned the Royal Family.

Rowan Atkinson and Barbara Windsor acted as hosts for the unusual spectacle.
