EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Richard E. Grant's 'spat' with Richard Herring

EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Richard E. Grant’s Oscar-worthy ‘spat’ with podcast host Richard Herring

When Richard E. Grant was nominated for an Oscar, he portrayed himself as a blushing ingenue in a social media campaign of celebrity selfies and exuberant videos that won him a legion of new fans.

Now, however, another side to his character has emerged, which makes him sound like a bit of a humourless, self-regarding luvvie.

Comedian Richard Herring has revealed that an interview he conducted with Grant was banned by the Withnail And I star after he joked about the actor’s talent.

Herring, now 55, chatted to Grant, 65, in front of a live audience in 2019, shortly after the Academy Awards.

Grant, pictured, had been nominated as best supporting actor for his role in Can You Ever Forgive Me? but failed to win.

Talking about his podcast RHLSTP, Herring says: ‘A couple have gone wrong without me realising. Richard E. Grant wouldn’t let me put his out and I can’t work out why.

‘It was one of the best ones we ever did… And he blocked me on Twitter, so I can’t even ask him.’

Herring adds: ‘He hadn’t won the Oscar but he’d been nominated and everyone beforehand had been saying, ‘He’s being all giddy and playing up because he’s trying to wow the voters, he’s just playing an act’.

‘And he said, ‘Yeah, that was very annoying to me because I was just enjoying the thing.’

‘I said, ‘Yeah, and if you were that good an actor you’d have won the Oscar, wouldn’t you?’

Speaking on the Walking The Dog podcast, Herring adds: ‘It occurred to me in the moment, he could walk off or it could be the best bit of comedy ever… if he takes it the right way, which was as a joke.

‘He seemed to like it at the time. I think it was the overall impression — he felt I was taking the mickey out of him, which I wasn’t.’

Grant couldn’t be reached for comment.

Sandra Howard is hoping that supporters of the two rival candidates in the Tory leadership contest will put hostilities on hold at the launch party for her new novel, Love At War.

‘I know there’ll be Tory MPs and elder statesmen supporters of both Rishi and Liz present,’ says the model turned author, who is married to former Tory leader Lord Howard.

‘But while they might disagree over tax and policy, I think it very unlikely that anyone will be getting into any heated political debates at what is, after all, a book launch.’

I’ll keep you posted…

Nadiya stirs up a £1m success

Two staff are reported as being employed. Nadiya (above) owns the business and runs it with her IT manager husband, Abdal.

Freya’s wild bond with pet lion cub

Most teenagers would be terrified to come face to face with a lion, but Freya Aspinall is made of sterner stuff.

The 18-year-old, who spent her childhood at her father Damian’s wildlife parks in Kent, has shared this photo of her pet lion Azi nibbling her arm.

Freya says she has a close bond with the one-year-old.

‘We had to hand-raise Azi because his mother rejected him,’ she says. ‘From this, I was able to develop a completely natural relationship with him. No training, no taming. Pure love and trust.’

He may be vegan, but that hasn’t dissuaded Chris Packham from sinking his teeth into the BBC, which pays him handsomely for presenting Springwatch. After watching its coverage of the Tory leadership debate, Packham wails: ‘Why is this wretched fiasco on BBC One?’

Tim Bonner, of the Countryside Alliance, tells me that Packham should be ‘free to express his views… but the BBC should be equally clear that it cannot employ presenters who destroy its reputation for impartiality’.

A BBC source says Packham is not bound by its impartiality guidelines, as he doesn’t work in news or current affairs.

Anthea Turner announced her engagement to socialite Mark Armstrong almost three years ago, but she’s been beaten to the altar by ex-stepdaughter Amelia Bovey.

The former Blue Peter presenter, 62, has stayed close to the three daughters of her second husband, Grant Bovey.

Amelia, 29, invited Anthea and Armstrong to her wedding to Gloucester rugby player Freddie Clarke.

‘Don’t we all love a wedding,’ says Anthea, whose marriage in Italy was postponed because of the pandemic. She and Armstrong, top, are now planning a winter ceremony here.

‘Everyone gets quite excited about winter glam,’ she adds.

Armstrong seems excited about ‘summer glam’ — he was later pictured wearing his fiancee’s hat.
