Elemental becomes Pixar's first film to have a non-binary character

Elemental is Disney Pixar’s first film to have a non-binary character – but becomes studio’s worst performing film on opening weekend after taking just $29m

Disney’s Pixar has unveiled its first non-binary character in the studio’s newest feature release, Elemental.

But despite its progressive stance, Reuters reports that Elemental had officially become Pixar’s second-lowest box office debut.

The film takes place in the fictional Element City where fire, water, land and air residents live together.

The film features the voices of Leah Lewis as Ember Lumen and Mamoudou Athie as Wade Ripple.

It has now been revealed that voice actor Ava Hauser plays Lake, who is Wade’s younger sibling and goes by they/them pronouns.

Hauser, who is also non-binary, took to social media to reveal the historic news that they play the first non-binary character from the renowned animation studio.

Congrats! It has now been revealed that voice actor Ava Hauser plays Lake, who is Wade’s younger sibling and goes by they/them pronouns

On Twitter Hauser penned: ‘BIG ANNOUNCEMENT I got to play Pixar’s first non-binary character. Meet Lake,’ the voice actor posted on Twitter.

‘I voice Lake in the new movie Elemental. I’m seeing it in theaters tonight with my friends, so you can catch it in theaters too if you wanna see them.’

The film is directed by Peter Sohn who is best known for his work in 2015’s The Good Dinosaur.

The movie took in roughly £23.3 million at US and Canadian box offices over the weekend and opened in just three major international markets.

Analysts predicted Elemental would open with at least £24.1 million at domestic theaters, a number which is set to be finalized on June 19.

The film features the voices of Leah Lewis as Ember Lumen and Mamoudou Athie as Wade Ripple, though the Cannes press release has revealed two French actors – Adèle Exarchopoulos and Vincent Lacoste – will voice Ember and Wade.

This will be the French actors’ first experience with film dubbing, with the French voice cast rounded out by Gabriel Le Doze, Coco Noël, Céline Monsarrat and Michel Dodane.

The film is set in Element City, where fire, water, earth and air live in perfect harmony.

This is where Ember, a fearless and quick-witted young woman with a strong personality, and Wade, a sentimental, fun-loving, go-with-the-flow boy, live.

Their friendship challenges Ember’s beliefs about the world they live in.

The original voice cast includes Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O’Hara, Mason Wertheimer and Joe Pera.

The film takes place in the fictional Element City where ‘where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together,’ according to a press release

Highly-anticipated: Elemental is set for release on 6 June 2023 in the UK with a US release following on June 16

‘As we all emerge from our pandemic cocoons and come together in story rooms, animation dailies and impromptu brainstorming sessions, it’s a joy and honor to have Pixar back on La Croisette,’ said Pete Docter, Pixar’s chief creative officer.

‘Directed by the extraordinary storyteller Peter Sohn, Elemental is so funny, full of heart and, frankly, stunning to see,’ Docter continued.

‘It was created for audiences to experience on the big screen and I love that it’ll make its world premiere at Cannes,’ he concluded.
