Today, Eamonn Holmes drew attention to his health as he issued a bittersweet family update. The 62-year-old was every inch the proud grandad as he gushed over his granddaughter Emilia walking for the first time.

The one-year-old was seen taking numerous steps before she lost her balance in a cute video adored by many of his fans.

Alongside the post, he wrote: “My Granddaughter Emilia chose today to take her first steps….. Glad one of us is able to walk!

“Beautiful but ironic timing with my back operation!!!!! Inspiration for a very proud but somewhat immobile Grand Pap.”

Many of Eamonn’s one million Instagram followers flocked to his post to comment.

Jo_omeara commented: “Glad your home Eammon!! Everyday is a better day.”(sic)

Skysarahjane wrote: “Wishing you a speedy recovery! Rae and I will come visit you with grapes and Lucozade… you’ll have to fight her for the grapes! X.”

Ge.mma2469 added: “Now the fun begins, Emilia can reach up and get into more mischief.”

Ni.cola7176 typed: “Very cute, they grow up so quick. Hope you are recovery well.”

Earlier this week, Eamonn announced he was taking a break from television to prioritise his health.

In his column with the Daily Express, he explained what he hoped his vital operation will solve.

The GB News presenter said a surgeon will cut into his back to hopefully relieve pressure on his sciatic nerves.

He explained: “It’s an operation that carries a 20 percent risk of going wrong, but such is the pain and restrictions that I have been suffering for the past 18 months, I’ve decided it is a risk I am willing to take.

“In fact, it’s a risk I want to take because, at this moment in time, nothing could seem worse than the constant pain that runs through my lower back and legs.”

Eamonn went on to say he considers himself “fortunate” despite his pain, as he acknowledged others are worse off.

The presenter said he knew this due to his regular interaction with fellow sufferers on social media.

In recent weeks, Eamonn has tweeted how the pain in his back had kept him up at night.

He explained: “It’s sad to think that so many are alone in their pain capsule.

“You can be surrounded by family and friends and yet the pain is exclusive to you. It is your companion.

“It’s like living with the enemy.”

He added: “I pray that God will guide my surgeon’s hand this week and help me get back to the man I used to be.”
