Harry shares private phone call to Queen after being blocked from seeing her
Prince Harry has revealed the details of a private phone call with the late Queen about his decision to leave the UK with Meghan Markle, in a candid interview as part of their Netflix docuseries.
The Duke of Sussex, 38, discusses the phone call as Meghan, 41, claims she was blocked from seeing the monarch in the fifth episode.
The couple talk about the events that led to their decision to ultimately depart the UK and quit their work as senior royals in early 2020.
Harry and Meghan had spent Christmas in Canada in 2019 and had scheduled to fly back to the UK, with Harry saying he emailed his father Prince Charles at the time, to tell him about his and Meghan’s plans.
He then recalled how he called his grandmother to tell her that they were returning to the UK.
Of their private chat, Harry revealed: “Before we left, I spoke to my grandmother as well and told her that we were coming back on the 6th, and I would love to come and see you.
"She knew that we were finding things hard. I’d spoken to her many times about it. She told me that she had no plans for the week.
“She said: ‘Well, why don’t you come up?’ You can have tea, but why don’t you stay the night, you and Meghan?’"
Asa the Duke and Duchess were due to jet back to the UK to meet with the Queen, they say they were informed that the Queen would no longer be able to see them.
Meghan says in the documentary: "So we were flying back from Vancouver straight to Heathrow and right as we were getting on the plane, this urgent, urgent message comes through to H saying, ‘You are not allowed to go and see Her Majesty, make sure your principle is aware he cannot go and see her. She’s busy, she has plans all week.’”
Harry added: "I was like, ‘That’s certainly the opposite to what she had told me.’ Once we were back in the UK, I rang her and said ‘I’m now told that you’re busy.'
“She goes, ‘Yes, I didn’t know I was busy. I’ve been told that I’m busy. I’ve been told that I’m busy all week’, and I was like ‘wow’.”
Meghan said she remembered looking at Harry as she realised “this when a family and a family business are in direct conflict.”
“They are blocking you from seeing the Queen,” she said.
“But really what they are doing is blocking a grandson from seeing his grandmother."
Harry had previously referenced his private phone calls with his grandmother during his interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, however didn’t reveal what was said at the time.
