Heartbreaking moment Fiona Phillips husband reveals what shes been like since diagnosis
Former GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips shared the heartbreaking news yesterday that she has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.
The 62-year-old shared with The Mirror, where she is a columnist, all about her condition and said that her disease has "ravaged" her family and now it has "come for" her.
Now her husband, This Morning boss Martin Frizell, has spoken out about her battle and confirmed that he and her two sons will be by her side now she is on a treatment journey.
Martin, who also spoke to The Mirror, was asked if he found it difficult coping with Fiona’s episodes of memory loss.
He said: "My only frustration is just I want her to get better.
“I want her to remember things. I want the apathy to go and I want this person back who was vibrant and interested in things and eager to do new things. But she’s not there at the moment.”
Although Fiona has admitted she tries 'not to rely on him too much', the couple of years has no doubt been challenging for the 64-year-old who has had to 'ramp up' as a husband as he takes on more responsibilities.
Martin admitted: “I have absolutely ramped it up.. Before I didn’t ever have to worry about Fiona before and now I do.. ‘what is she doing all day while I’m at work? What is she doing in the evening if I’m out? What has she eaten?”
“But you are having to be more reliant on me and that’s why it will be good to widen the group who know what is happening so there will be other people you can rely on too”, he added.
Fiona, when sharing her diagnosis with fans, also admitted that she decided to initially keep it quiet from her two sons.
But as she wanted to offer insight into her experience, it prompted her to tell children Nat, 24, and Mackenzie, 21, after a few months of silence on the subject.
The journalist believed they may have started to see changes in her but she didn’t want to “make a big thing out of it” and have them “sit down as a family” for an announcement.
She said was “worried” the boys would be “embarrassed in front of their friends” or treat her “in a different way” but this is not the case.
