Dan Walker, 45, appeared on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show today, where he was quizzed about his former Strictly Come Dancing partner Nadiya Bychkova, 33, and her new pair-up with Matt Goss, 54. The former BBC Breakfast star insisted that the Bros singer is “very shy” and told Zoe Ball, 51, that the star needs more time to change the public’s minds about his dancing ability.

Dan appeared on BBC Radio 2 today to promote his new book, Standing on the Shoulders.

When radio host Zoe started taking calls, one Sheffield-based listener named Bruce Davis asked Dan what he thought of Nadiya’s new Strictly partner.

“I’m really enjoying watching them,” Dan revealed. “I think Nadiya is brilliant and doing a fantastic job.”

The Channel 5 presenter then went on to address the fact that Matt had not yet hit his stride in the competition.

“I think Matt is very shy,” Dan suggested. “He’s a performer, but he’s very shy and I think he just needs a bit of time to show everybody what he’s made of.

“Hopefully they get that time, I think they could be brilliant,” he added.

Strictly’s Movie Week saw Matt and Nadiya dance a Viennese Waltz to Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick, in honour of the singer’s grandparents.

After previously receiving low scores throughout the competition, the couple once again failed to impress the judges and ended up in second to last place with 21 points – just above Tony Adams, who scored just 18.

Last year, Dan finished in fifth place on Strictly with partner Nadiya, despite having no previous dance experience.

This is not the first time he has defended the Ukrainian ballroom and Latin American dancer over her partnership on the show this year.

On Saturday night, former Strictly pro-turned-commentator James Jordan, 44, took to Twitter to criticise her partner Matt’s dance moves.

He wrote: “Just from reading all of your comments on Matt Goss this evening I don’t even need to watch the show to say I think he’ll be in the bottom 2. After all – YOU are the ones that vote.

However, Dan did not agree with James, firing back: “He was much improved big man. Clearly worked hard this week.”

James replied: “They nearly all work hard as you know – but if you’re not good at least be entertaining.”

Dan then quipped that dancing to entertain was his “mantra”, with James agreeing: “And you was mate – I b****y loved it!

“He has a slight awkwardness about him and needs to let go and not take himself so serious – just an observation,” he added, bringing the conversation back around to Matt.
