I’m A Celeb star Mike Tindall’s relative was ‘dead against’ marriage to royal Zara

Mike Tindall is the first royal to join the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! cast.

The 44 year old married Princess Anne’s daughter Zara, 41, who he has a secret affectionate nickname for, in 2011.

But Mike’s dad Philip has since opened up about the fact that not everyone in his family was happy about the marriage, telling the Sunday Times that Mike’s late grandmother opposed the union.

Philip said: “Linda’s mum was dead against it. In her day, royalty married royalty and she thought the wedding would be shunned.”

He explained that, despite her expectations, the Royal Family was “just lovely” right from the start of Mike and Zara’s relationship.

The revelation comes after Mike headed into the Australian jungle for this year’s I’m A Celebrity, which has returned down under after being relocated to rainy Wales for two years during the coronavirus pandemic.

He’s joining celebs including Matt Hancock, Scarlette Douglas and Boy George, who is thought to have commanded the show’s highest ever fee of £500,000.

It’s not known how much Mike is getting paid, but the total bill for celebs this year is thou ght to have exceeded 2 million pounds.

Mike met his future wife Zara in 2003 in Sydney, when the two are thought to have been introduced by Zara’s cousin in a bar.

The former Rugby star was down under for the World Cup which he, along with the rest of the England squad, won that year.

The pair announced their engagement on 21 December 2010 after seeking the Queen’s consent, before marrying in Scotland the following year.

The pair tied the knot on 30 July 2011 at the Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh in a ceremony viewed by a huge crowd of 400 guests, before heading to nearby Holyrood Palace to enjoy a lavish reception.

Mike retired from professional rugby in 2013, but his wife is just as sporty as he is.

Zara, an equestrian, competed in the 2012 London Olympic Games, where husband Mike was seen cheering her on.

The team went on to win a silver medal – with Zara’s being awarded by her own mother Princess Anne, 72.

Despite an unsuccessful attempt at qualifying for the 2016 Rio games, Zara has continued to ride horses competitively and recently competed at the Chatsworth Horse Trials.
