James McAvoy plans to pull back from acting to focus on his family
‘I don’t want to live to work’: James McAvoy reveals his plans to pull back from acting to focus on his family as he welcomes a son with wife Lisa Liberati
James McAvoy has revealed he plans to take a step back from acting in order to spend more time with his family in a new interview with The Observer.
The publication reports that the actor, 43, has recently welcomed an infant son with his new wife Lisa Liberati.
The Scottish star already has a 12-year-old son called Brendan with his ex-wife Anne-Marie Duff.
Slowing down: James McAvoy has revealed he plans to take a step back from acting in order to spend more time with his family in a new interview with The Observer
MailOnline has contacted representatives for James for comment.
He said that he didn’t want to ‘spend all my days on set’ and was trying to slow down to be a more ‘present family member’.
James said: ‘I put in the work quite a lot and I love it. But I don’t want to live to work. The industry is great and it’s given me an amazing life. But it survives on the sacrificial nature of performance. The film industry or the TV industry, they’re just using you up.’
He added he doesn’t want to end up like Bill Murray’s movie star character in Lost In Translation, where he ‘is ‘estranged from his wife and kids’.
He went on: ‘Do I keep chasing, do I keep progressing, do I keep trying to climb the ladder, the mountain, all that kind of stuff. Or do I just continue to enjoy the act of acting – but taking the foot off the pedal. And not feel like I’m never gonna work again. Or than I’m gonna lose momentum, which arguably I have, if I just don’t take every great job that comes my way. You need to slow down a wee bit.’

James continued: ‘It’s just not possible to be a present family member if you are a filmmaker every week of the year, every month of the year. Theatre’s different – if you do tonnes and tonnes and tonnes of theatre, you’re out six nights of the week, invariably. But you’re there more during the day. It’s really film and telly – it just f***ing drains you. It’s also a joy and I love it. But I can’t spend all my days on set.’
The private X-Men star confirmed his marriage to Lisa earlier this year, after years of speculation.
James was reflecting on his identity with the Guardian newspaper, and the publication noted of him and Lisa: ‘They began a relationship a couple of years later and, he confirms, recently got married.’
As Lisa hails from Philadelphia, James was asked if he is now an honorary Philadelphian and told the newspaper: ‘Yeah, it’s like a second home for me.’

James offered no further details on their nuptials.
The couple began dating in 2018 after they met on the set of Split in America.
James had a leading role in the film while Lisa was a production assistant for the director M. Night Shyamalan.
The leading man had been married at the time to actress Anne-Marie Duff but was in the process of separating from her after 11 years of marriage. The exes share 11-year-old son Brendan.
Just two months after the divorce was finalised, the new couple posted a number of pictures of themselves on Instagram together at a fancy dress party to announce their relationship.
In 2019 they were rumoured to have wed when Director Jamie Lloyd, who is a close friend of the Glasgow-born actor, was overheard referring to Lisa as James’s ‘wife’ and said they married ‘recently’.
In July 2020 the couple moved into a sprawling house in London after spending lockdown at his modest city apartment, which he took over after moving out of the £1.9 million four bed home he shared with Anne-Marie.

During their time in isolation, James boasted of Lisa’s cake and donut making prowess on his Instagram account as well as some of her Jamie Oliver styled dishes.
He later revealed that the couple had all their belongings packed up in their spare room and were eventually managed to move to a bigger house once lockdown was over.
He said: ‘We are in London and it’s all good. We’ve just moved into a nice, slightly bigger house but we were in a tiny flat before.
‘Round about April we built a makeshift studio in my spare bedroom. Our only spare bedroom which was full of moving stuff was rammed and just full of this James made recording studio.’
