‘There is so much stuff I haven’t been able to speak about [before]. You have to speak to the writers about your experiences to be able to make music.’

Adding: ‘I am being able to speak my truth on songs. I want to make music that makes a difference so this is really important for me.’

Jesy is no longer with a record label and said she has felt free to put her own stamp on her latest single Bad Thing, in which she plays a victim of domestic abuse.

The singer worked with Women’s Aid to charter the highs of lows of a toxic relationship in the 1960s music video.

Directed by Charlie Sarsfield, Jesy cried real tears after her onscreen boyfriend (played by Sid Ellisdon) grabbed her by the throat and shouted at her.

The video documents Jesy’s onscreen partner battling infidelity, being in with the wrong crowd and drugs in London’s East End in the sixties, while she struggled to leave as he consoled her after their explosive argument.

Jesy said: ‘It was really important for me to create this video because a lot of women in my life have experienced domestic violence. I wanted to raise awareness.
